One of Danny Kaye's finer hours, this farce stands the test of time pretty well. Kaye was the Jim Carrey of his time - if you don't like his pratfalling style of physical comedy once, you won't ever like it - but even if not a fan of his particular brand of tomfoolery, the verbal patter alone is worth the price of admission.
The plot should be brushed over - it's intricate and daft as a good farce should be, revolving around mistaken identities and wooing the girl, and multiple characters up to nefarious deeds. Complications arise when Kaye tries to pretend he is the Jester, and is then hypnotised to believe he is a great swordsman and lover, and changes between identities at the snap of a finger. It is the wonderful script that makes ... Read More:

At 27 years of age, my husband bought this for me for Christmas, as I love this time of year and happy festive films. This is the first time I have ever seen White Christmas and I loved it! I would really like to find more classics of this type but I have no idea where to start! An excellent film, I can't wait to see it again!

What can you say regarding Mr Kayes performance simply "you wish you had half the talent of this great entertainer" timeless classic actually being made the same year as I was being made and seen as an impressionable child at the insistance of a father who Idolised the comic genius and of the few people who like norman widom could make you feel laughter, anger, sadness, elation, tenderness and almost every other emotion in and out of the book. Every kid should see it from 1-100 years of age.

Of the 4 leads in this musical, only Vivienne Blaine belongs in a musical, being a major vaudeville & Broadway singer & hoofer before this was made.
Despite this, it's a thoroughly enjoyable experience, good colour and sound and an outstanding supporting turn by Stubby Kaye. Jean Simmons retains her English innocence well as a Salvation Army lass and even assists in helping you forget that Damon Runyon's picaresque language translates hopelessly to screen.
But the best bits are Brando & Sinatra. Brando surprisingly fits well into Sky Masterton and tackles things with enthusiasm. There's also a permanent smirk on his face, because he knows that Frankie wanted HIS part all along, and doesn't it show! Frankie's face throughout looks ... Read More:

I bought this because my little girl loves the story of Rapunzel but this was nothing like the original story. Yes she has long hair and yes her name is Rapunzel but that is it. She did enjoy watching it but Rapunzel it is not.
Release Date January 12, 2004
A weak but pleasant farce based on a play, there's really only one reason to watch this movie, and that is Danny Kaye. The man had a unique talent for making tongue twisting lyrics not only possible but intelligible. This movie is no exception, with a few witty songs, fewer still witty moments, and more than soupcon of gurning along the way.
In terms of content, the style is light and frothy, with the satirical nature of Gogol's play on which the movie is based is sweetened away almost in its entirety. Message filled farce has given way to Danny Kaye vehicle, often way over the top. That said, it does raise a smile with infectious humour. There are a few good lines.. "Oh, I love my family, but I'd give my six kids to get rid of my wife.", and the twisting of the original ... Read More:

One of the funniest movies movies I have ever seen, good old fashioned clean fun. I highly recommend watching this movie, even if you are not a fan of classic cinema. Look out for the tea cup and the dog biscuits, both have many people in tears from laughing so much.
