The Gable-Laughton version of Mutiny on the Bounty bears about as much relation to history as Michelle Pfeiffer does to Idi Amin and in some ways it's a rather under-ambitious and repetitive bit of work for all the splendor of its staging. Much of the first half is just a catalog of brutalities completely at odds with the facts (the unlucky Bligh was a much more lenient captain than was good for him and the loss of the Bounty was cited by many contemporaries as proof that then-recent reforms of conditions were a disastrous mistake) and more in keeping with Victorian melodrama. The print of this film isnt fantastic but as its a cheap dvd and the only version currently available I cant really complain, its nice just to be able to see this film at long last. I always wanted to see it because of the fabulous COLIN CLIVE who was a fabulous actor but sadly very little of his work is available for us fans to see outside of the first 2 Universal FRANKENSTEIN movies. Im pleased to say though, hes just as good in this...very watchable...though the film is rather short (just over an hour) and naturally concentrates mostly on the JANE EYRE character..played by VIRGINA BRUCE. Cant say I was very impressed with her performance, instantly forgettable, and as for that obnoxious child she is tutoring, in once scene the little annoyance falls ... Read More:

While no match for Nicholas Ray and Samuel Bronston's 1961 film, the restored version of Cecil B. De Mille's The King of Kings is surprisingly good. It's a curious mixture of showmanship and sincerity, with sincerity surprisingly gradually winning over even if De Mille was using a film about Christ to defraud his principal backer into keeping his failing studio afloat with a lot of creative accounting (the film cost a million less than the accounts stated!). Although it skirts close to anti-Semitism at times for a film made by a Jewish director (albeit a closet one), it does ultimately make the distinction between good and bad people who happen to be Jews, adding a Jewish character who won't take Caiaphas' bribe to call for Jesus' death.
