If you want a night of blood, madness, dirt and sex...this film is for you. It is a great story but I just did not believe in the characters (with the exeption of Henry)and hence did not much care about their fate. This made the film unexciting. Yes it looks great and authentic but every character is portrayed as brutal and none come across as really likable which gives the film an unbalanced feel. You get to the point where you just wish they would all kill each other and be done with it. This is not light entertainment or a tale for the romantic at hearts. It does tell an interesting story if in a somewhat unconvincing and nightmarish way.

The Pornographer is a film that tires to be very controversial, but doesn't really help itself; this film could have been perfectly well told without the sex scenes which has had a 11 second cut due to the sexually explicit ending of the scene. To me, this just didn't need to be there. So the question begs; was this just trying to be a shocker to get more bums on seats at the cinema, or was there a real reasoning for it all?

Jacques Laurent (Jean-Pierre Léaud) is a porn director who's made rather explicit movies right up to 1984, when he decided to end. Jean-Baptiste, an unpleasant painter, is dead. His family and friends have to travel to Limoges for the burial. And what a family; nary a one of them appears to be happy or settled. The opportunity to kick off at a funeral seems irresistable to one and all. Yet for all their apparent excess at the heart this is a film about sad people saying goodbye to someone who damaged them more than they care to say. I would recommend giving it a wide berth unless you are unnaturally happy and want to curb that.
