i thought this movie was really good, a bit unrealistic though as her father wouldnt have been in the u.s peace corps as he was english. it is defintly worth a watch.
Release Date July 23, 2001
A really realistic view as how a man copes being left widowed with a young baby daughter...it has some funny bits (you know how men can be, sometimes!)but is all the more, a very toughing film, leaving you happy in the outcome.
A light-hearted film, great to watch on a night in.

Lets face it, Madame Bovary was always going to be difficult to produce. The story really centres around Dr Bovary, and Emma Bovary is his second wife, and you have to read about his first marriage until you get to Emma. Although I am a fan of Flaubert and Madame Bovary, as well as many others, I can also see where a large group of people are coming from when they say that this book is one of the most boring written.Madame Bovary (Penguin Classics) if you would like to read the book.
This production is not a straight transposition of the novel, opening as it does after Dr Bovary has lost his first wife. We see in this drama Dr Bovary getting Emma to become his second wife. Emma has been brought up spoiled by her father. Dr Bovary has been brought ... Read More:

It's easy to be cynical of a film whose main protagonist is an American playing a character in English literature, and it is also very easy to criticise their performance. Before watching this film I did wonder whether Reese Witherspoon was merely cast in the role of Becky Sharpe in order to bolster the film's budget. And then I thought imagine if a Keira Knightly (god forbid) had been cast, and suddenly old Witherspoon didn't seem so bad after all. No one bats an eyelid anymore that Renee Zellweger was cast as Bridget Jones, although I concede her accent is a damn sight more convincing. That being said I think Witherspoon does a rather good job in a role that is at times rather disagreeable. In the film's favour `Vanity Fair' boasts an excellent supporting cast, tribute ... Having bought the stage play and compared this to the film they are the same but also they are not. The scene in the market ( actually in Halifax not Bradford) is told by Norman on stage. In the film you actually see everything. Both work but I do not know which is better. No wonder Ronald Harwood won an Oscar he really is one of the best writers working in Britain.
The only real invention for the film is the scene shot in York station.
I saw the film in Bradford at a cinema right next door to the theatre it was filmed in.

People critisize this film for there own reasons and I think there is a simple reason. They either get it but pretend they dont or they do and say it does not stand up to scrutiny. 2 Things make this film great. GBs greatest and ocasionally worst export the late and greatest of english actors Richard Burton and Peter Shaffers superb play. The film is worth it alone for Burtons monologues which are hair-raisingly superb from the first eerie moment in his dark office to the last scene where the camera pans to his pupil and into the soul of Burtons troubled genius. People who say the psychology is 'cod' are most likely Freudians who dont like the deeply Jungian theme placed so enigmatically in such a mainstream film. Psychology for the masses? Surely not! But yes this film says ... Read More:

An excellent film. Unfortunately it was deprived of Academy Awards it would otherwise have deserved by the fact that it came out in the same award year as The Return of the King (which was possibly the best film in the history of cinema). Jude Law takes a break from his penchant for vapid non-acting and turns in an astonishing performance as Inman. Nicole Kidman is very good, but is thoroughly trumped by a Renee Zellweger who I feel can breath excellence into the most dull of roles (I could not have countenanced Bridget Jones in any other form; fortunately Cold Mountain's Ruby Thewes is a gorgeous, meaty character). The movie was by no means over-long, but I would recommend the novel for a fuller flavour of the story. More films like this would make expensive trips to the cinema ... Read More:
