This is a depressing and miserable movie right up to the point where the Daddy gets shot and killed by a bank robber. At this point my 7 year old got up and walked out of the room saying "I dont like this film, I dont feel safe now". No matter what the end message is, why did Disney think that guns are OK in a Christmas movie for children? Only in America, eh.

This is not Buffy or Angel, so do not buy it on that expectation. A far better comparison would be to American Gothic, another show cancelled too soon. However this is more like a teen version of American Gothic, which I consider to be a highly enjoyable show. It ends in a similair vein to Carnivale - so obvious that second series (although in the case of Carnivale, a third) could be continued on without too much re-arrangment of the ending. It may be a 15 but is not half as dark as Angel or Buffy could be.

The first hour or so of this film is very slow moving and tedious, in fact I came very close to giving up on it, but I did persist and the pace and interest levels improve after the first hour. Like the director's better known Blair Witch, this film involves a creepy forest setting. It is another one of those stories where a group of American teenagers go off to spend some holiday time together in the middle of nowhere, and then spooky things happen (you would think the youth of America would have learned it's lesson by now)! Despite the fact that this is an incredibly impressive film, with an amazing storyline and some fantastic acting, it is not hard to see why it did not appeal to a larger mainstream audience upon its initial release - Pretty Persuasion's sense of humour is as black as it's 'heroine's' soul. Balancing very black comedy on top of some controversial issues, such as sexual assault, teen sexuality and racial identity was always going to be a tricky feat, but both the director and the cast have managed ably, crafting a film that is not only highly watchable and enjoyable, but also has some genuinely new things to say about our media-driven society and its effect on younger generations, whilst pulling off a spectacular genre-mash two thirds of the way through when the ...
