Not the greatest movie in the world, not the greatest musical either, but anything with Gene Kelly is worth having as he's a true major star in anything he does. I love the music and the fanciful story. Yes, the Americans trying - or not trying - to produce Scots accents, that's cringe-making nowadays, but this movie was made a long time ago when the Americans didn't see anything strange in Scots sounding like strangled Americans. Nowadays it wouldn't be accepted but if what you want is a modern film with modern standards, you won't be watching this fairy story anyway.

For someone who doesn't usually like romantic films, i was pleasantly suprised with this one.
All the actors were on top form, as well as Brad Pitt, who gave a performance of many faces.
The gorgeous Claire Forlani gave, what i see to be, her best performance so far.
The story has the detail, but the almost 3 hours of film actually fly by. It has humour, love and class, which keeps you glued to your seat.
I hope you enjoy it as much as i did!!

This has not dated! The story is great, the song and dance routines are brilliant, the comedy is first class; and the story has an anchor in cinematic history (the change from silent movies to talkies). I'm not surprised it hasn't been re-done by anyone else; how can you improve on Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds, Jean Hagen and Cyd Charisse?

This is a really good film in all aspects. If you watch it simply as a very well produced film version of a fictional book, it is great to sit back and admire the quality of the work.
Some reviewers however do appear to have been misled into believing that the plot in some way matches the facts of the actual events of the famous Stopes trial. This is the fault of the book and misleading information over the years rather than the film per se, although there is no more attempt to inform the viewer of the film of this than there is the reader of the original play. if you have any doubt about the disparity between this fiction and the facts, watch the film, research the details of the actual people involved and read the genuine trial transcripts ...
