Outstanding. I get bored sometimes with some of the long dance sequences in classic musicals, even in great movies like Singin' in the Rain and the Fred-and-Ginger musicals, but this is one of the few films where the dance is truly a pleasure to watch. The lead actors Natalie Wood and Richard Beymer are not often mentioned much in review but the youthfulness and sincerity of their performances is key to the film's success. Those who produced the film considered many options for these two roles and as with everything else, they got it right.

I wish i had the opportunity to watch this film for the first time over again. This film has everything, great cast, great songs, great dancing, love, tradegy and Natalie Wood. My favourite film of all time.

I went to see this with my friend and his older brother when I was about 12 years old. The local RAF base had sponsored a double bill of this with 'Reach for the sky'. It was a brilliant night out, to see two brilliant films. In 'real life' I have little time for the armed forces, but in film this is unbeatable.
I also remember swallowing a murray mint whole, during the film. Luckily it went down without me having to require medical assistance, but I still remember the sore throat.

So good to see this title back in circulation as it's one of the most exuberant and colourful musicals ever made. Demy's Les Parapluies de Cherbourg always seems to get all the critical plaudits, however, for pure cinematic pleasure Les Demoiselles goes one step further. It's a paper-thin story, but who cares when the score is so ravishing and the performances so charming. It's rather like revisiting MGMs golden age - complete with Gene Kelly.
My only gripe is in the DVD production, or rather over-production. There's a great hour-long documentary about the film made by Demy's widow, Agnes Varda, and some interesting, but not exactly essential other extras. Unfortunately we have to pay for them as they run to 2 DVDs. As usual from this otherwise ... Read More:

If the tagline for It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World was `Everyone whose ever been funny is in it,' then Rene Clement's epic could almost lay claim that `Anyone who's ever been French is in it,' assembling Alain Delon, Jean-Paul Belmondo, Charles Boyer, Leslie Caron, Jean-Pierre Cassel, Yves Montand, Simone Signoret, Michel Piccoli, Jean-Louis Trintignant, Claude Rich and others (Paul Crauchet, Bernard Fresson, Michel Lonsdale, Patrick Dewaere and Albert Remy can also be spotted if you look hard enough) in a spectacular retelling of the Liberation of Paris. While the French producers intended a great patriotic celebration of the deliverance of the capitol under the threat of total destruction after Hitler ordered nothing be left of the city but ruins, Paramount, who picked ...
