I adore this quirky, funny, endearing, unique and slightly bizarre film. I think this might be the film equivalent of marmite, but if you're in the 'love it' camp then you'll probably, like me, develop a love affair that will last a lifetime. Seen the movie quite a few times now and know I will never tire of it.
I recently saw two films directed by Norah Ephron. This one and Sleepless in Seattle (1993). Both have held up remarkably well. Curious to know the background (if any) to You've Got Mail, I did a little research. Its basic plot can be traced back to Nikolaus Laszlo's play The Shop Around the Corner which was adapted in a film of the same name directed by Ernest Lubitsch in 1940, co-starring Margaret Sullavan and James Stewart. Then in 1949, it was recycled as a musical (re-named In the Good Old Summertime) co-starring Judy Garland and Van Johnson. What we have here is the latest version of Laszlo's original story, brought to the screen again with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan in the lead roles. In fact, Hanks and Ryan had appeared previously ... Our son borrowed this DVD and loved it so much that he wanted his own copy. Wasn't sure how long he would enjoy it when we bought it but it has been worth every penny and then more. Since then, I've lost count of the number of times he and friends have watched it.
They all love the story, the comic one-liners and the music.

America tries to take over where France failed in Vietnam. US soldiers prepare for combat, using new idea of 'air cav' -- i.e. helicopters. They say goodbye to their wives. They fly out to the 'Valley of Death'. Many get killed as the Vietnamese almost overrun their position. Wives of dead soldiers receive telegrams. The US counter-attack, aided by much air support. America withdraws, believing it has won the battle.
That's the basic story. After so many films about US adventures in the Far East -- 'The Thin Red Line', 'Apocalypse Now', 'Platoon', 'Full Metal Jacket' etc -- I feel this film adds nothing to our understanding of war, although it's useful to see the highly organised, subterranean approach of the North Vietnamese strategists. ... After renting this DVD following the good reviews on here, I just wanted to stop anyone else wasting an evening watching this utter tosh, as I did.
I watched to the bitter end in the vain hope it would eventually get better, and it doesn't. Wooden acting, hammy lines, a desperately over-aged cast that makes the main premise of the plot laughable and a cast of entirely dislikeable, shallow characters, means this is one film I would not recommend anyone to see.
Maybe the original, with better cast actors and made in a different era, was quite good. I don't know, I haven't seen it. But for even the most die-hard Harrison Ford fan (and believe me, I like him a lot usually), this is one to miss. How he got through the film without cracking ... Read More:

For all its apparent shortcomings, 'As Good as it Gets' delivers pure entertainment and a heart-warming underlying message of how change for the better is possible in our lives.
Terrific renditions from Nicholson, Hunt and Kinnear and a clever script from Jim Brooks add all the necessary ingredients for this deservedly successful late 90s romantic comedy.

Jane (Ashley Judd) is an intelligent, attractive woman satisfied in her job on a daytime chat show, working alongside the apparently insensitive, womanising bachelor Eddie (Hugh Jackman). When Ray (Greg Kinnear) is joins the crew Jane feels an obvious attraction but soon learns he is in already in a relationship going on four years. They embark on a discreet affair when Ray reveals he is unsure of his current relationship and make preparations to live together after Ray drops his old girlfriend. Pretty soon though, Ray breaks it off with Jane, leaving her homeless and broken-hearted, so through necessity Jane moves in with Eddie. Whilst trying to understand Ray's desertion and Eddie's behaviour, Jane reads a report on an experiment in cattle breeding that seems to ... Read More:

This is one of my favourite movies of all time. I harass as many of my friends as possible into watching it (preferably with me so I can have my fix!).
Most American comedies rely on people doing silly/stupid things for their humour as opposed to being witty. 'As good as it gets' aims to address this in my opinion. Most of the humour comes from Jack Nicholson being the scathing, disinhibited (and hence) friendless Melvin. His OCD means he visits the same diner every morning for breakfast where Helen Hunt is a waitress. She is also the only person who will put up with him, always quite happy to tell him to watch it and/or shut it she is Melvin's secret love.
The robbery and assault of Melvin's neighbour serves as the catalyst for change in his life which ... Read More:

caught this film while flicking through channels one night. It really struck a chord.
So funny, so sad, so intense.
I was crying with laughter at the margarita scene and the scene leading upto the jump in the pool was very reminiscent of holidays in spain during the 80's
The bullring had me on the edge of my seat - will he or won't he?
