... I just LOVE this film. Its an eighties masterpiece. I remember watching it as a child and instantly falling in love with Mikhail Baryshnikov. I haven't seen it for nearly 25 years and I've just watched it again, it is just BRILLIANT. I felt all the same things I did when I was young but this time I understood all the difficulties involved with the lead character's defection to the West. The dancing is thrilling and the soundtrack, although distinctly eighties, suits the time and style of the film beautifully. Great film.

You know when you're drunk and talking drivvle with your friends. You discuss subjects like the children's progammes you used to watch, school teachers you had, the best of some things and the worst of others. This film, which I saw many years ago, yet still haunts my memory is my answer to the question, "What's the worst film you've ever seen?" My answer is always, and I mean always, 'Waiting to exhale, with Whitney Houston'. That is three hours of my life that I want back. I rest my case.

I had totally forgotten about this film until I saw a clip on TV, so time to check it out again. I have to say, although I had not seen it for about 15 years, I forgot how timeless and funny this is. A parody on famous movies and times in history, with some suprisingly good effects for the time. For me, Mel Brooks can be quite hit and miss, but this film was a definate hit. Who else could do a musical number about the Spanish inquisition?

The late Gregory Hines shows his consumate skill in this feast of authentic 'hoofing'. The plot recalls some of those old Warner Bros. plots. An ex-con is released from prison and has to decide between a life of lucrative crime or going straight. What makes the decision more difficult is that his original dance style is considered too good for Broadway. So, Hines has to make do with dancing in racy night-clubs. Highlight of the film is a 'cutting contest' between veteran 'tappers' including Harold Nicholas, Jimmy Slyde, Bunny Briggs, Steve Condos, Sandman Sims and the superb Sammy Davis. Suzzanne Douglas provides the love interest and watch out for 13-year-old Savion Glover as a hero-worshipper. His brief routine almost steals the show!

This is a great movie with great actors. Whitney Houston and Denzel Washington teamed together in a beautiful comedy... They both did a great job as actors, but Whitney singing gospel is just phenomenal. A great movie for your soul (because of the music)

From the director that brought us other manipulative tear-jerkers such as "Big" and "A League of their Own" comes "Renaissance Man" which unashamedly pulls the same tricks and more or less guarantees not a dry eye in the house by the end.
Bill Rago (Danny DeVito) is an overworked overstressed advertising executive. After a failing to win a lucrative deal for his company he is fired and for the first time in his life finds himself drawing social security benefit. After registering himself as available for any type of work he is given an assignment to teach failing students at a Army training camp. Although he protests that he is no teacher, as far as the department of employment are concerned, he has a Masters Degree and is therefore qualified ... Read More:

I have a copy of the original which is one of the best thrillers of the eighties, which lacked a great deal of movie quality of any kind, but the sequels really are getting tedious.
The second one was okay, but I wasn't interested in buying it, but the third was downright awful. Russo was simply annoying. She was violent and arrogant. I thought the whole thing was annoying. The biggest mistake the franchise made was lightening up. The dark edge was what made the original work so well.

The most striking thing about this film is the really horrific clothes that the two stars wear on their vacation! Brought tears to my eyes...
But regardless of that, this is still a decent enough movie. Not really a roller-coaster of action and comedy, but still a good film with plenty of laugh-out-loud moments. Some of the jokes fall badly flat, and trying to believe Billy Crystal as 'Bad Cop' just doesn't work for me, although he certainly makes up for it with some great one-liners. Hey, you could see far worse.

for an early '80:s horror film, this is not bad, not bad at all. sure, the video effects are a bit pathetic, and the dialogue a tad cliché, but the film does induce a level of fear and paranoia - just like a good horror film should.
as always, the book is better. the story in the film is quite different from the one in the book, and although they do pull it off, the original is much more scary. in fact: i'd recommend anyone interested in horror to get the book.
but by all means - watch this film as well. as i said, it is rather good.

A chain of sketches that portray a popular image of The Jazz Age in New York. Phenomenal cinematography, casting, choreography and a soundtrack that is a tribute to Ellington. Not a linear story but a series of steps (reproduced metaphorically in the explosive tap dancing of the Nicholas Brothers as portrayed by the Hines bros.) that build a staircase to nostalgia. Gets better with each viewing.
