Carmen Jones [1954]

starring: Dorothy Dandridge, Harry Belafonte, Olga James, Pearl Bailey, Joe Adams (IV)
directed by: Otto Preminger

Release Date March 29, 2004
This is Bizet's Carmen brought into World War 2 and given a black American cast. Oscar Hammerstein wrote new words for Bizet's music. The show was first produced drung WW2, and this movie was made in 1954.

Dorothy Dandridge and Harry Belafonte are grand together. What a shame they used opera singers for their singing voices, both had musical ability. I believe a more jazzy flavour to the music would have worked just as well. At least Pearl Bailey's singing voice got used, Her 'Rhythm On A Drum' is one of the film's highlights.

Just like Carmen, Carmen Jones is on the unstoppable route of tragedy and self destruction. She seems resigned to and even glories in her fate.

Otto Preminger's production ... Read More:

Island in the Sun [1957] (REGION 1) (NTSC)

starring: James Mason, Joan Fontaine, Dorothy Dandridge, Joan Collins, Michael Rennie
directed by: Robert Rossen

Release Date January 10, 2006
On an island in the West Indies, four couples struggle to find happiness, with varying results. Plantation owner Maxwell Fleury (James Mason) fears his wife is unfaithful to him, his sister (Joan Collins) falls for a young British nobleman but carries a dangerous secret, his sister-in-law (Joan Fontaine) falls for a political organizer (Harry Belafonte), and a store clerk (Dorothy Dandridge) has an affair with a British officer.

This movie deals with two inter-racial romances and was quite controversial in 1957. It tried to be daring and ground-breaking, but any semblance of inter-racial affection was censored out, resulting in a shallow, uninvolving soap opera. It moves too quickly from couple to couple in order to serve the large ... Read More:

directed by: Sidney Poitier

Release Date January 13, 2004
This is a kind of film that people like to keep around. It's not Shakespeare but it's fun and light and it features some pretty wonderful performances. In here we have Steve Jackson (Sidney Poitier) and Wardell Franklin (Bill Cosby) are two working stiffs looking to have a good time uptown. They tip out on wives Sarah Jackson (Rosalind Cash) and Irma Franklin (Ketty Lester) and go to Zenobia's, a joint - named after Madame Zenobia (Lee Chamberlin) - where the high fallutin' high rollers hang out for a little casino action.

Unfortunately, they lose their shirts (literally) when robbers force them and everyone else to strip and give up their valuables. Thugs Zenobia's not only take all the patron's money and jewels, but also Steve's wallet, ... Read More:

One can only admire a man who regardless of forty years of economic blockade against his people, can still talk well of neighbouring USA. A must for those who wish to aspire.
