Unless you were brought up with Harry H Corbett and Wilfred Bramble and Hercules the horse you may find the comedy a little dated but it still ranks as one of the BBCs finest dramas with some very poigniant acting by both actors especially Wilfred Bramble whose character of an ageing father is played superbly.
It bares testimony that the series is worthy of release by the BBc in its entirenty on dvd though the younger viewer may feel a mono chrome picture is difficult to watch never having been used to black and white broadcasts.Unless you were brought up in the 60ies early 70ies when Steptoe&Son was televised you may not take the effort to watch it.
Im sure 90% of purchasers buying these dvds will be people like myself ... Read More:

I'm so glad other reviewers agree with my opinion on Ladies Who Do. It's a fine piece of social history and has some great stars in it. I remember watching it as a child and loved it. I was not disappointed when I saw it again 30 years later. It truly is an age we will never see again.

I am a huge fan of Steptoe & Son and I have all the individual releases of the eight series and also the two films. Like with Dad's Army I really wanted to complete my collection
The stumbling block... the edited release of these Christmas specials. I know the BBC dvds have a habit for this, you just need to see the Only Fools and Horses, Ideal, the original The Young Ones releases, Citizen Smith and Bottom DVDs. They may only be minor edits on some of those, but is disappointing that they do this. Even Yes, Prime Minister Series 1 was treated badly by being on a double sided disc, when other ones of these were on two discs. There have also been sloppy occasions with The Likely Lads and Hancock DVD releases where an episode has been missed ... Read More:

Absolutely loved this movie and I'm not much of a fan of Carry On. Harry H Corbett shows us amazing glimpses of his talent and genius as he hams it up with the rest of the crew. I heard that Sid James had originally been cast as the Sherlock Holmes character, but Harry was the best choice and his performance is polished and a joy to watch. Some wonderful set pieces which had me laughing out loud and the usual silly scenes we can expect from a Carry On movie. The story never gets tired and will appeal to all ages. I'm also sure that sultry Fenella Fielding could still cause a fashion stampede for replica red gowns.
Okay, so this is no Carry On masterpiece, but it will certainly put a smile upon your face!
Barry Evans stars in this 'saucy' sex farce about a randy Taxi Driver, and the opening scene is suitably funny as we see Diana Dors playing the part of his mother marvellously! This is what made Dors so great - the contrast of parts she went on to play. It is hard to believe that just several years earlier, she was playing the 'blonde bomb shell' ('Tread Softly Stranger') and although she was still beautiful, was not afraid to don some theatre make up later on and play character roles.
After the opening scene mentioned, this movie is a bit slow, but bear with it as it does get going, and it gets more amusing ... Read More:

And so at last we come to the first series of 'Steptoe and Son' to be released entirely in colour, although of course it was actually the third series to be originally filmed in colour. We now know why the two earlier colour series were released in such poor quality black and white versions, and I suppose we should be grateful to have them at all, but it still reflects badly on the BBC losing/dumping them in the first place, as does the extremely basic, almost throw away packaging of these releases. Once again no extras and the most minimal annotation. They may as well have released the disc in a clear plastic sleeve!
Presumably because all the episodes were all available in colour this was the Steptoe series most repeated on TV (it was generally much superior to ... Read More:

These two film versions of that all-time great TV comedy Steptoe and Son are a rather mixed bag. It is perhaps widely accepted amongst fans that the second film is perhaps the better of the two and in this I agree.
The first film 'Steptoe and Son' is not bad but is nothing really special either, the trouble is that the storyline just does not feel like Steptoe and Son, being a kind of tragic comedy and an emotional rollercoster that just does not fit the characters.
The story deals with the consequences of Harold getting married to a stripper whom Albert doesn't approve of and ends up with the old man tagging along for the honeymoon, after the inevitable split up a baby is left on their doorstep, Harold of course assumes that the kid is his and is horrifed ... 'STEPTOE and SON' remain , for this writer, THE superior example of BRITISH comedy from the 1960s and 70s: principally due to the highly accomplished, polished and immaculately tuned performances of the two indestructable leads.
'STEPTOE and SON' at their peak actually managed to attract a staggering half of the entire UK population within their viewing figures; a phenomenon that is unlikely ever to be repeated.
This contains the hilariously untypical 'SEVEN STEPTORAI' entry; which features an extended, elaborate fight sequence that is stuffed with uproariously hilarious gags.
Despite some slight misgivings from previous reviewers, this series is certainly amongst my own personal favourite......FIVE STARS,no hesitation!

I am still not sure for certain what is my favourite ever British sitcom but this is a contender and definitely without any hesitation in my all time British sitcom top ten. Out of all my favourites, this is definitely one of the oldest and this first series is a long time before I was born but it's high standard and ability to make me laugh is so far ahead of any modern British sitcom that has been made in the last ten years at least.
I am suprised that the BBC don't repeat this much, they just can't fit it into their precious schedule plus they don't think that it will appeal to the younger generation like myself and so us younger people that really like this must be according to those in charge at the BBC, in a too small a minority but as always, the current trend of repeating ... In reality, Wilfred Bramble (Steptoe) and Harry Corbett(Son) never got on with each other. However on camera, they were a formidable duo, and some of the acting seemed so natural, you wonder if all the scenes were performed on the first take itself. The two episodes 'Desperate Hours 'and 'A Star is Born are real gems. Steptoe is indeed a crafty character far more cunning than his son who is doomed to follow 'his old man'.
Menu isn't bad but nice extra is the interviews conducted
