This was one of the most unimaginative, derivative and just plain boring films I've ever had to sit through. It tries to be a cross between a Dan Brown thriller and an Indiana Jones film and merely succeeds in reminding the viewer how superior those two genres are. The acting is terrible too. The new Indiana Jones film is 100 times better than this. Avoid!

John Boorman's 1981 film is an exercise in how to treat fantasy in an adult and serious manner.
The fantasy elements are subtle - there are no stop motion monsters to be found here - and yet still pervade the movie with a sense of the magical & arcane. This film in no way attempts a realistic approach to the extent of 2004's King Arthur.
Merlin as portrayed here is dark & ambiguous, constantly aware of the end of the time of magic & the old gods. A very eccentic performance by the
excellent Nicol Williamson. Helen Mirren as the evil & seductive sorceress, Morgana gives an erotically charged performance that is not easily forgotten!
Nigel Terry as Arthur is a bit wooden BUT his tone & manner suits the film's ... Read More:
This film is mind numbingly tedious! Plotless titilation of the profoundly indifferent.
It's absolutely implausibly far too long cobbled together nonsense appealing to feminist ideology by presenting itself as some bra burning, or in this case removing, remedy to the place women find themselves in and it just does not work on any level!!
I'm off to burn my jockey shorts and do a calender for the British Legion.

I have just finished watching this set. I had seen some early episodes originally but watched all again. It is almost a bit "Lost on Mars" as the early series now do seem dated or rather perfectly portraying that time - the early 1990s. I found myself watching the clothes of DCI Tennison and of course the ageing of her in her character with all the trials and tribulations faced by a woman in the police force and in her personal life. She is a demanding , admirable yet imperfect character and it is heart wrenching to see the last episode when retirement beckons. Absolutely fantastic performance by Helen Mirren and of course the rest who make their characters just so believable!

I have to 'admit' that i saw this when i was a student when it first came out at the Prince Charles theatre, Leicester square. As an 18 year old i was only really interested in the s-e-x and was inevitably disappointed by the lack of it in the edited version of the time. Now seeing the full uncut version that probably would have made me see it again and again hehe. Its certainly more explicit in terms of mainstream cinema than anything ive seen anywhere else. Not a great film by any means but the 'storyline' and depiction of Rome at that time probably is fairly faithful. The acting of all the leads is good and the script for the most part isnt bad at all. And lots and lots of humour. As for the reviewers who suggest it is 'well known' that the actors didnt ... Read More:

If, like me, you think life is too short for the "extras" which are included in "special editions" - largely consisting of the people involved saying how marvellous it was to work with the other people involved - then you need to know that this 2-disc set is mislabelled. I habitually store movies without their cases in albums, and the first thing I do is to chuck out the extras. I did this with "O Lucky Man", on the strength of the label on Disc One which says "The Movie". In fact the movie is split over the two discs, and as a result I ended up with only the first 1hr 25 minutes! But the movie is good enough to be worth buying twice....

I came to this film not expecting it to be so concerned with the death of Diana. As someone who found the whole atmosphere at the time of her death to be more than nauseatingly over the top, I found this film intelligent in its analysis of events, while also serving as a documentary piece chronicling the events objectively.
Superb performances aside by the whole cast - despite doubting the actor playing Tony Blair at first, he actually did a very good job of capturing his mannerisms without creating a cliched pastiche of a character - this is an important historical film. It covers the issue of whether we need a monarchy or not, without over-simplifying matters, as films of this ilk are wont to do.
In the same way that Oliver Stone's 'W' portrays Bush in a bad light ... Read More:
