As the story opens early in 1939, Mrs. Miniver (Greer Garson) is a happy wife and mother living a charmed life in an English village. Her husband, Clem (Walter Pigeon), is a successful architect and she has three children she adores. When war is declared, her life is deeply affected: Her eldest son is a pilot in the Air Force, Clem is gone for days on boat patrol, and her village is subjected to enemy bombs.
Released in 1942, this movie was a big hit with its patriotic message and wholesome family values. While the Miniver family is somewhat idealized, they nevertheless feel the horror of wartime. It's rousing and sentimental without being overly preachy and won six Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Garson is just perfect as the ... Read More:

Yes, it is a great life affirming movie with its heart firmly in the right place...BUT...personally I would have prefered not such a happy ending, or a very different kind of happy ending - I just feel that the miraculous turnaround of George's fortunes at the end, while rightly suggesting that all good deeds may be remembered, and returned in kind, missed a real chance to state that happiness didn't have to depend on material wealth at all - After all, when he was given his old life back, George's euphoric happiness was based soley upon his family and friends, regardless of his dire financial state! This was a real chance to bang the point home about the real dangers of capitalism, but it was totally spurned. Indeed, this ending almost suggested, after roundly ... Read More:

A marvelous story from the writer James Hilton. There are some changes in the story, and some scenes are chocolate box such as the cottage bt the stream with trout in the lake, and the horse and cart pulling up with the bride and groom. Ronald Colman and Greer Garson are first class actors, but they seem to old to be to old for the parts they play.Coleman looks like a man in his late fiftys. Walking out of the unguarded asylum in 1919, when in fact he would be in his early twentys called to enlist in 1914. The characters Smithy meets in the gradual unfolding story are interesting, Biffa Briggs the boxer, Harrison the man who comes to work for Smithy or Charles Rainier as he is revealed to be, and of course the romantic interest of Paula Ridgeway played by Greer ... This is my favoutite film of all time. The story, based on a James Hilton novel is rather clever. A first world war officer has shell shock, loses his memory and cannot even remember who he is. Placed in an asylum he manages to 'walk out' on the day war ends and 'bumps into' Greer Garson. They fall in love, marry and have a baby. Then, on a trip to Liverpool he gets knocked down and his memory returns, however, his memory from shell shock to marriage to becoming a father is lost. The story becomes quite intense at times with one of the most wonderful endings any film could have. I haven't given the story away, just the beginning as I wish to lead you into one of the most memorable films you could ever watch.
Forget special effects, forget high power action ... Read More:

It may not be his "best" film, but Shadow Of A Doubt remains my favourite Hitchcock film. Some state, such as his daughter Patricia, that it was his favourite too, although in typical Hitch fashion he stated that that wasn't the case during his interviews with Francois Truffaut.
Joseph Cotton excels as Uncle Charlie, who's visit to a small suburban American town is intially welcomed with open arms by his neice Young Charlie (another superb performance by Teresa Wright) but soon takes a much darker turn as she comes to the realisation that he could be the merry widow murderer.
There are a number of suspense set-pieces to thrill, although casual viewers of the Hitchcock experience coming to this film for the first time might be surprised at the relatively ... Read More:
