I remember watching this film when it came out, and was absorbed by the suspense and surprise, yet random 'deaths' that occurred throughout. In typical fashion, I lent it off a mate at school, who I'm sure we all knew one, had dad who was a bit dodgy... and had the pirate copy on VHS. It was a big talking point, and we all laughed over various parts of the film.

Unfortunately, I personally don't think the film is half as good second time round. I'm sure it's not just me now that i'm older, but it seemed the more I tried to take it all in, the less convincing it all is. This film isn't too bad. I hadn't read any reviews before watching the film on DVD and didn't really know what to expect. In the opening minutes, I found myself groaning 'oh no, here we go again, another one of these generic films'. I watched on and about half an hour later, the film suddenly suprised me. Quite gruesome, quite unexpected...

A word of warning though, once the action gets going parts of the film do become a little predictable. The film could have done with having more tension built in and the characters weren't really likeable enough so I wasn't bothered if there were all killed off. The Hard Way [1991]

'The Hard Way' blends action and comedy perfectly. It is a very funny film, but also a great film for action-lovers. Michael J.Fox plays an actor who wants to learn how to play a cop in his next film, so he is assigned to work with James Woods. The combination confront some good and funny situations while James Woods can't stand Michael J.Fox. There is a good speech about how many takes (chances) a cop gets to get it right and how many an actor gets. The climax at the end is great, as is the location. This film does not disappoint and delivers another buddy cop film with a difference.

Toys is a whimsical tale, led by a niave Robin Wiiliams who pits his wits (and toys) against the mad Michael Gambon (before his Harry potter days).
Toys is visually appealing, the story absorbs you and doesn't let go. The characters are weird, wacky and fascinating.
If you don't like Toys, then you've obviously had a stinted childhood.
Toys is for everyone!

On paper, it's hard to see what could go wrong. Between Morgan Freeman and Kevin Spacey, there's a stellar cast here. LL Cool J is proven in action roles, Piper Perabo is always a personable female lead and Timberlake has proved his acting chops in Alpha Dog and Black Snake Moan.

This movie, however, is a poorly plotted mess. The pace is off, the timing's off, and everything is just very poorly executed. Everything feels extremely predictable and any kind of thrill/suspense is missing. I think the only thing that saves it from one star ignominy is the presence and gravitas of Freeman and Spacey. I didn't know what to expect when I saw this movie, as I was in the middle of a two or three-month stretch of renting out nothing but "hood" movies, most of which were fairly mediocre. Here, though, I wasn't disappointed.

I'd never seen Omar Epps in a movie before this one, and I have to admit, I was pretty shocked that such an amazing actor had passed me by without my noticing. His role isn't an easy one to play - it could so easily have been overacted - yet he gives a flawless performance as a troubled man trying to figure out where his loyalties lie. LL Cool J fills out his role very well, making a menacing - if vaguely cliched - drug lord, and Stanley Tucci brings a sense of comfort and lightness as the police chief and Epps' mentor.
