A little jewel of a film! This movie was released with not much fanfare in 1983, but has developed a loyal following in the U.S. due to it's repeated airing on cable television. Such is it's cult following, that American cable network TBS regularly hosts a "Christmas Story Marathon" during which the film is shown for 24 hours straight, from Christmas Eve to Christmas Day! I moved to Ireland from America 6 years ago, and have searched in vain for this film to appear on the Christmas schedule of RTE, BBC, Sky or any of the other 500 channels on my system. Sadly "A Christmas Story" is virtually unheard of on this side of the Atlantic, and I soon realised that I would probably never see it again, unless I bought it myself.

The fly is a horror classic from the 80s that deserves its reputation as a well told, well acted gore shocker.
No amount of description here can do justice to this film that contains just about every level of horror and suprise. On a deeper level Cronenberg the Director gets his Lovecraft flag flying, as our imaginations run riot as to how far the fusion of human and fly will go.
Blu Ray
Although I had read good reviews of the picture quality I found that the ordinary bits of the film look just that - ordinary. However it is the incredible make up and gory effects that pay dividends in blu ray. You can see just how much that department has put in to lift the film to its classic status.
The picture is devoid of ... Read More:

Wow. This film is just...Wow. Although it won an Academy Award for Makeup, the fact that it was a horror film probably prevented it being deservedly nominated for Best Picture, Director, Actor, Actress, Screenplay and Effects. The somewhat smoother and less gory Silence Of The Lambs would finally kick down the Academy door for horror films just a few years later - perhaps The Fly's excellence prepared the way for the later film? The Fly has everything: humour, drama, horror, romance, tragedy; the lot. It's a complete cinematic (emotional) experience, reflected in the enthusiasm of its creators during their extensive interviews (amongst this edition's many extra features). The Cinema Reserve Edition packages the dvds in a very elegant, slim tin case - if only ... Read More:

The Fly marks the central point of David Cronenberg's distinguished directorial career so far. He would achieve a certain tabloid notoriety a decade later with the laughable Crash, but this story of loner scientist Seth Brundle's (Jeff Goldblum) fusion with a house fly strikes the perfect balance between Cronenberg's ongoing exploration of squishy body parts and mainstream cinema's demands for high concept genre conventions.
It would first appear that the genre in question is horror. Indeed, many of the final scenes, including the gooey Grand Guignol ending, are straight from the splatter canon. There is method to this madness: Seth is dying - literally falling apart; and the insect in him - brutal, totally without compassion or table manners - is ... Read More:

I have often wondered why there are so many bad horror movies these days. Movies that instead of focusing on suspense and real chills, just pour endless amounts of blood in your face, thinking this will do the trick, and hopefully become a cult classic. Film after film, more and more horror movies are becoming increasingly similar, and you can almost guess the whole entire plot of the movie, no more than 10 minutes into the film. Everything in horror these days is all about over the top special effects, numbingly loud thumping music, that is supposed to get you scared. Black Christmas (the original) is (IMO) one of the best and scariest horror movies ever made. Why? you ask. Let me tell you. There are so many reasons. First. In horror today, when someone (usually the pretty girl) is walking ... Read More:
