Dante 0.1 [2008]

starring: Linh Dan Pham, Lambert Wilson, Dominique Pinon
directed by: Marc Caro

Release Date September 15, 2008
Only slightly better than eden log. There are some nice visual effects to be seen here but that's all really. In fairness the director does add some information in the "making of" feature as he reveals the film leaves more questions than answers. So we have prisoners in space, experimentations, a mysterious stranger and plenty of metaphors about rebirth and creation. You can work the rest out yourself and whilst the film may look polished, it is generally a let down. Just don't expect many answers and a lot is left to your own interpretation which may not be a bad thing. This film didn't captivate me but having paid for it, i wanted to know how it ends.

Indochine [1991]

starring: Catherine Deneuve, Vincent Perez, Linh Dan Pham, Jean Yanne, Dominique Blanc
directed by: Régis Wargnier

Release Date July 30, 2001
In its day a casualty of the chaos and confusion surrounding the frequently ridiculous entry qualifications for the Best Foreign Film Oscar - many superior films were ruled ineligible and those it was competing against were scarcely representative of the world's best - Indochine may not be great art, but it is an enjoyable example of the kind of old-fashioned good storytelling that Hollywood rarely produces anymore.

Set against the last days of the French occupation of what was to later become Vietnam, it uses the relationship between Catherine Deneuve's French plantation owner and her adopted Vietnamese daughter (Linh Dan Pham) as a mirror for the relationship between France and Vietnam. Like the American South, for the privileged few, ... Read More:

The Beat That My Heart Skipped [2005]

starring: Romain Duris, Neils Arestrup, Jonathan Zaccai, Gilles Cohen, Linh Dan Pham
directed by: Jacques Audiard

Release Date March 27, 2006
I fully accept the negative reviews, because the first time I sat down to watch this film, I got bored after 15 minutes and decided to try again another evening when I was less tired and had more time.

And I'm so glad I gave it a second chance, as I thought it was magnificant. Romain Duris is a true star and an incredibly talented and intuitive actor. Please ignore the Liam Gallagher comparison - more young Vincent Cassel, young Robert de Niro and young Al Pacino merged into one. For such a superficially unlikeable and unsympathetic character, Duris somehow manages to make the viewer care. I desperately wanted him to escape his crminal life and be able to return to his musical roots, and the relationship between him and his tutor is skillfully protrayed ... Read More:

I picked up the region 1 DVD a few days ago, I was surprised it was on DVD as it is was fairly recently released. I had high hopes for this and it didn't disappoint. Everything about this is masterly.
The hand held camera work is brilliant particularly during the removal of squatters on the estates, especially the night sequences and the claustraphobia it creates makes it intense and unnerving.
The editing is wonderful, it keeps the pace going, the estate agents always seem to be on the move day and night and it creates that non stop energy about it but also allows the quieter more pensive moments to breath and reveal so much more.
The acting particulary Duris as Tom is brilliant and as often quoted is very reminiscent of early De Niro or Keitel. His father ... Read More:
