The good bits in this movie are all in the visual part. The camera work is stunning and the wildness of Alaska hits you hard.
But I couldn't imagine that anyone was as perverse or plain dumb as this character. Surely on your first day in a snowbound winter landscape, you don't willingly jump into a river? This and other acts of stupidity left this viewer totally out of sympathy with the character.
Then there is the way he patronised everyone who helped him. These people were kind to a smartass boy who repaid their kindness by leaving them to sort out their own mess, which he had usually made worse. He would listen to other people's problems and then say "good luck, I'm off to have an adventure". I couldn't wait for a bear to eat ... Read More:

Firstly, let me say that I am an enormous Stephen King fan. I am currently re-reading his back catalogue and I believe his skills at characterisation and character-driven plots are unsurpassed and that some of his books have been made into fantastic films (The Green Mile anyone?) However, this was not one of them.
The lack of excitement and pace were palpable almost from the offset and sadly not helped by the wooden acting of most of the characters. I wouldn't have even minded it not being scary if it had effectively shown the breakdown of different people and personalities, but i didn't feel that this was explored with enough power to make you actually empathise with any of the characters.
And don't get me started on the ending. I ... Read More:

Director Frank Darabont's enthusiasm for this project virtually drips off this 2 Disc edition. If you missed this in cinemas I would recommend this to any fan of intelligent horror as a must-buy for your collection. The picture did fairly well at the world-wide box office ($57 million) from a budget of $18 million. Stephen King's novels and short stories have normally been adapted for the small screen so it is to the credit of Weinstein Company that they decided to shoot one of his stories for the big screen and give Frank Darabont the budget and creative freedom to deliver us the creepy masterclass in suspense that he has done.
Bright and early the morning after a great storm David Drayton (Thomas Jane) surveys the damage to his garden ... Read More:

I won't provide a synopsis as there is already one provided on Amazon.
I got this on US import in a 2 disc edition which contains the original version and a black and white version of the film (Frank Darabont wanted to release it in black and white but the studio was not happy with this idea, "the kids" don't "get" black and white apparently!!)and I would definitely recommend tracking this edition down. The film itself is most definitely a homage to '50's and '60's monster B-movies, and does not take itself too seriously, but is obviously made with great care and love by Darabont. The effects are not top notch, but that really doesn't matter as you find yourself so engrossed in the panic of the characters and their interactions with each other. It has been said many ... For someone who doesn't usually like romantic films, i was pleasantly suprised with this one.
All the actors were on top form, as well as Brad Pitt, who gave a performance of many faces.
The gorgeous Claire Forlani gave, what i see to be, her best performance so far.
The story has the detail, but the almost 3 hours of film actually fly by. It has humour, love and class, which keeps you glued to your seat.
I hope you enjoy it as much as i did!!

Release Date October 13, 2003
This is not a great movie.
I watched Blood Simple for the first time a few weeks ago and really enjoyed watching Francis McDermott. She was fantastic in Fargo. Fargo was a great movie with all the right moves, excellent tone, bizarre characters, and a flatly affected but very strong pregnant cop played by McDermott. The Coen brothers are known for their slightly off-kilter films. Raising Arizona with Nicholas Cage and Holly Hunter was a very successful and entertaining quirky movie. Strange characters and bizarre situations can be very entertaining. The formula just doesn't work in Miller's Crossing.
Gabriel Byrne stars as a dirtball gangster. He's the slimey no. 2 to Albert Finney in Finney's massive gangster world. Finney is the real power in ... Read More:
