GOD,this is a bad film,so disappointing to see the great mr allen churn out such dross,script-poor,acting-very poor,characters-unlikeable,the whole thing makes very little sense,even the stunning mrs johansson can't make it watchable,and just a side point jonathan rhys meyers,playing "a poor irish boy",presumably under direction,adopts an accent posher than any of the toff family he marries in to.i'm writing this as i watch the film and every scene confirms my opinion.

The story's been done before, the script isn't the best and the main character's english accent isn't either. Compared to other mainstream films it isn't anything special. For an LGBT film it's great. Let's admit it... lesbian films are generally pretty poor so compared to them, this one is excellent! Perfect for a night in with that special someone :o)

Brideshead Revisited [2008]

This latest version of Evelyn Waugh's "Brideshead Revisited" is a middling success: neither a triumph nor a failure. More importantly it does not diminish the grandeur and mighty ghost of the 1980's Masterpiece Theater production with Jeremy Irons as Charles Ryder and Anthony Andrews as Sebastian though Matthew Goode (as Ryder) and Ben Whishaw (as Sebastian) do their best, through good and cogent performances, to top their predecessors. And while Irons and Andrews operated in a production that ran many hours and therefore had the luxury of time to define their characters, Goode and Whishaw have only 2+ hours to focus and grab our attention.

Chasing Liberty

While this is essentially a predictable Rom Com it has a lot going for it. Matthew Goode is irresistible, Prague and Venice look gorgeous, yes it's romantic and it's fun, fun, fun.
The extras are ok though you should skip the gag reel as it features only Jeremy Piven being even more irritating than usual.
Here's the bad news. The DVD is in a widescreen format that results in the picture being a miserable, narrow stripe across the centre of the tv, even a widescreen tv. Back in the days of video a film was altered to fit the then average 4.3 screen and I don't see why they can't now be adapted for 16.9. I'm fed up spending 15 minutes jiggling around with 'Aspect' to see which screen size distorts the picture least every time I want to watch ... Read More:

Whilst I am no expert on head trauma, I was never fully convinced of the lead character's difficulties after his accident. They seemed to be used when it fitted the plot and forgotten about at other times. Also, would a person carrying a card saying - 'I have had a serious head injury and must not go up stairs' be allowed to drive a car?

Other issues - Isla Fisher's character didn't make any sense either, wasn't sure what her motives were. The bad guys seemed to be quite boring and cliched and as soon as a certain character starts talking about his new-born on the way, you can be sure what his fate will be.

The only thing this film has in common with Memento is the lead character writes notes occasionally, otherwise it's nowhere near ... Read More:

On the bad side it is just too plastic and 'American'. The coloured contact lenses, perfect American film 'natural' make up and peachy skin plus the carefully arranged toussled hair etc. did not complete the period and detracted from the story. The eye-glasses the female character serupticiously slipped on and off also looked wrong for the period.The coming and going of American-English dialogue with weak American accents did not create a sense of Europe but were a distraction.

In my opinion, the actress was not a good choice. I am not familiar with her work but she gave a superficial performance when a weighty European Cinema character was needed. The actress seemed to me to have no understanding or appreciation of this genre of music and this showed ... Read More:

South From Granada [2003]

I was fortunate to obtain a 2nd hand Spanish language DVD in the outdoor market in Arunuez last year - it is entrancing - having already read the book the film managed to portray the poverty, humour and lifestyle of the 20's in a wonderfully encompassing human manner. If you are a Spanish student have a go at this. If you go for the English version you will still get pleasure from the scenery, society and fascination of Andalucia then and now. May be a bit slow paced for some.

Anyone wanting even further insight try reading his book.

This film is touching, funny, emotional, sad, has great characters and actors. One to watch even if you're not gay. Builds sexual tension from the first 5 minutes.
