Point one: I don't really like musicals but I watched this with my dearly beloved because she'd heard it was good fun.
Point two: I love Abba and was a big fan way back then and I still think they were just about the best pop group of the 70's.
But this film was just plain nonsense. Of course it wasn't to be taken seriously and was supposed to be fun and light-hearted. But that is no excuse for a) there being NO plot, b) some of the worst casting I have ever come across (Pierce Brosnan?), c) just about the most awful bunch of cover versions of some of the most-beloved songs in recent history.
Sorry, but this is one of the worst cases of exploitation of the value of "star pull" that I have ever come across. ... Read More:

I am what you might call a Mamma Mia addict - I saw it five times at the cinema, and am just about to start watching the DVD for the second time since it arrived on Monday. There is a very good reason for it....the film is fantastic! So funny and light-hearted, and even though some of the singing is quite ropey, this only adds to the film's charm. Meryl Streep's rendition of "The Winner Takes It All" is incredible. If you never buy another DVD again, buy this one! (And the gift set with diary, pen and "surprise" is good too!)

Just finished watching the movie and pretty much all the extras! Absolutely loved the movie (which has already been reviewed many, many times) - best movie musical I've seen since Moulin Rouge. And the Blu Ray - sound and picture - is just stunning. Having been to Skiathos and Skopelos, where this was partially filmed, made me want to go right back. Forget the DVD, buy the Blu Ray. Money well spent...

Having recently read a feature in Sight & Sound abaout how Clint Eastwood is possibly, going on his track record, America's greatest living director, I felt that, as a self-respecting film fan, I should really delve into a bit of his back catalogue. For some reason, the blurb about 'The Bridges of Madison County' appealed to me more than many of his other films, so I rented it and was in due course blown away.
The film is full of incredibly emotive, and as it moves on, incredibly tense scenes, expertly played by Eastwood and co-star Meryl Streep. It's fundamentally a love story, with Streep, playing an Italian who has moved to live in Iowa simply because it is in America, torn between her husband, who she has apparently grown out of love ... He likes to distill his movies' themes into a single word, Sydney Pollack explains on "Out of Africa"'s DVD. Here, that word is "Possession:" The possessiveness of the colonialists trying to make Africa theirs; to rule her with their law, settle on the local tribes' land, dress their African servants in European outfits (complete with a house boy's white gloves), import prized belongings like crystal to maintain the comforts of European civilization, and teach African children to read, to remove their "ignorance." And the possessiveness of human relationships; the claim of exclusivity arising from a wedding license, the encroachment on personal freedom resulting if such a claim is raised by even one partner - regardless whether based on a legal document ... I see a previous reviewer thought this film might be more light-hearted. Hello? It's called RENDITION.
Anyway. The acting isn't all it might have been and a rather unsatisfactory script leaves those all-important mobile phone calls completely unexplained.
But the torture scenes (and the standout performance by the north African torturer-in-chief) are well done and will (hopefully)leave audiences feeling highly uncomfortable.

This is one of my favourite films. The cast are obviously enjoying being in it as well which makes it nice to watch. There's some wonderful barbed dialogue and the performances are (while maybe a little broad at times) excellent. The reason this gets 4 stars and not 5 is the DVD itself.
It's only a bare bones release. There are a lot of deleted scenes from the film (including an entire subplot featuring Tracey Ullmann) that were cut out! In fact if you look up the trailer (youtube etc) for the film some of these scenes can be seen. Making it extremely frustrating that they are not included here.
In this world of "Special Editions" and constantly repackaged DVD's can't somebody at the marketing department suggest a re-release of ... Read More:

Having never seen the series before i was not expecting much, but this suprised me, at its best it was incredibly enthralling i watched lal 5 pretty much back to back. However no extras at all?!?! i just cant imagine what was going through the minds of the creaters when they called this an aniversay addition? I could have got a copy of the videos on ebay for 50p and just transfered on to dvd the quality would be just as good:( such a shame. I will recommend this series but not this set.

It might be a little slow in getting started which might but people off but it just adds to the magic of the story. I couldnt believe it when I read that this was a flop at the box office, I really enjoyed it.
It's a beautiful story about two people who think they have found love really find it. Meryl Streep & Robert De Nero was inspiring and truley believeable as Molly & Frank.
