Dylan Thomas's delightful Christmas poem is perfectly brought to life in this exquisite film. Denholm Elliot is charming as the grandfather relating the tale of his childhood Christmas to his entranced grandson. The setting is a Welsh seaside town in the early 1900s, and every scene is perfetly recreated. Humour and nostalgia are perfectly blended, as with the boy's struggles to build a meccano boat that the insturctions assure him are 'easy' "Oh easy for Leonardo!" as the grandfather exclaims. And he stands hopefully on a street corner with a sweet cigarette in his mouth, waiting for an old lady to scold him for smoking, but old ladies in those days were not so easy to fool. I first saw this Canadian-Welsh production in 1986 (I was 10 at the time!) and immediately fell in love with it. It's a nostalgic trip back into the sort of Christmas that probably never existed but should have. The prose is handled beautifully by the actors, especially Denholm Elliott, and the young leads are very good.
It's a warm, tender film and, mercifully, saccharine free. It's hardly ever been repeated in the UK, which is a crime as it is one of the finest seasonal pieces you could ever have the good fortune of owning.
However, as fine as Denholm Elliott is, one cannot help but wish Richard Burton had been alive to take the main lead. He would have been made for the role! This minor grumble aside, 'A Child's ... Read More:
