This 1970's Television drama was incredibly popular when it first emerged. It tells the story of an African slave, Kunta Kinte, who is kidnapped in his homeland and ferried across the Atlantic Ocean in a filthy slave ship, along with hundreds of other slaves.
Not only does it tell the story of Kunta, but it moves on from there and tells the story of Kunta's children, Grandchildren and Great-Grandchildren, all of which is based on the facts in the book version of Roots, written by Alex Haley. Haley traced his family tree back and wrote his family history; a history which is steeped in great historical, social and political importance, and this DVD version also engages viewers on a personal level.

Even allowing for their age, they totally lost the plot, and the scriptwriter, in the 3rd film, which simply should never have been made.Plus while they were funny at the time, the humour is now warm rather than laugh out loud, so three stars it gets, which is by no means a poor score. There aint nothing wrong with warm.

As above. I would be delighted to purchase the Roots box set (region 2 for UK), but I am very disappointed to hear about the cover errors. - I personally would not mind - as one reader states in similar words that it is the discs that matter most. However, I would be purchasing for my parents who are very elderly and easily confused by these types of errors. - It would ruin the enjoyment of the gift for them.
Can customer service please add an update here regarding if these errors have been resolved??

A film of two halves, but with a somewhat uncomfortable join.
This movie starts off with one of the most gritty and riveting hunts in recent memory. Pierce Brosnan's weatherbeaten and hardened ex Union officer is the hunted one, and Liam Neeson is the hunter, driven remorselessly by the ghosts of his past. The cold of the mountains, the pain of using a knife to gouge out a bullet and cauterize the wound, the chill of the water, the close quarters kills with the knife, all make for a visceral start with minimal dialogue and little explanation. Each man is completely single minded - one on survival, and one on revenge. As the chase moves onto the plains, we discover more about their past and the reason for the chase, marking a change in tone of the movie. ... Read More:

Due to an alleged stupid dispute between Warners and 20th Century Fox over who owns the UK rights to the Towering Inferno this magnificent 2 disc set is unavaible in the UK except on Region 1 import. But it is well worth the effort to get hold of one.
Beautifully packaged, with the main feature remastered and a host of fascinating extras, far to many to go into detail about on disc 2, plus a set of lobby cards, this is the ultimate Towering Inferno set and one that every fan of this classic disaster movie should own.

A fantastic plot, even allowing for the downright silly concepts of time and size. Or maybe NASA had had a budget cut?
Only kidding, but that's really what the film is about - 'What if there had been one screw-up too many'.
The plot is great, the scripting great, but....
It's the ending. It looks like the idea was rushed, bolted on due to lack of ideas or time, or replaces something else - a little like the ending from the theatrical release of Bladerunner, you know?
Ok, so Gould and Brolin race across the graves at Arlington (assuming that's where they are), and drop to slow-mo, as the press, the mourners, and the President to to look, not in slow-mo.
So, did Hyams run out of ideas, plot, money, or what? He gets it right in Outland, as the marshall takes ... Read More:

In 1976, two rail-orientated films were released : "Silver Streak", directed by Arthur Hiller, and the more superior disaster-epic, "The Cassandra Crossing", directed by George Pan Cosmatos.
The Cassandra Crossing centres around the chain of events of two terrorists mounting a raid on The International Health Organisation in Geneva, and results in both becoming infected with the plague, and one of them escaping on the Euro-Continental Express carrying this deadly epidemic.
Enter Richard Harris as Dr Johnathan Chamberlain, Ingrid Thulin, as Dr Stradler, and Burt Lancaster as the unpleasant Colonel Steven MacKenzie as the main players as each one of them has a different method of containing the disease.
Lee Strasberg's, Mr Kaplan is one of the most effective ... Read More:

An absolutely hilarious film with Leslie Nielson who plays the cop 'Frank Drebin' exquisitely. I have a simple clear message. IT IS BRILLIANT- ALL OF IT, DVD SPECIAL FEATURES- THE WHOLE THING IS A MUST HAVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As the other buyer indicated, the cover is misleading to say the least:
First, the film runs 123 Min 07 sec @ 23.98p[sf] 1080, so everything is just fine and complete.
Second, the film is presented in the Panavision ratio of 2.35:1; and while the frame may not be 100% perfectly framed, it is almost as good.
Third, the sound is well recorded from the Mag tracks (17.5mm) and well layed back. It could have been improved in balancing the dynamic range, but, the result is to most I guess very much acceptable.
So, why merely 3 out of 5 ? Well, actually only 2.5 of 5; the materials were cleaned partly as digital files (either tiff, targa, cineon or dpx) in hardware or software based tools; but the people who did this made several, partly severe errors. In numerous sequences the individual ... Read More:

Seraphim Falls is a welcome addition to the western genre and with time will overcome the negative initial critics reviews to reveal itself as a fine piece of cinematography to accompany what is probably Brosnan's best performance on film to date as a man mercilessly hunted down by Liam Neesom's character as a man on a mission of personal vengeance. The manhunt starts off on the high, snowy sierras then gradually moves down to the lowlands and finishes off on barren, hazy salt flats with some suitably surreal moments. The attractive score is pure quality. The picture and audio is wonderfully rendered on this HD blu-ray widescreen transfer. The BD has the same paucity of extras as the DVD release, but includes a commentary and all to brief behind the scenes featurette. Recommended blu-ray viewing.
