I first watched this movie around 2 years ago. It certainly made an impression - a lasting if a confusing one - as I persuaded myself it was time to watch it again last night. I should add upfront too, that I am totally unfamiliar with the game on which this film is based but more on that later.

What I like about the movie and on the other side of the coin, what may be a disappointment to others, is that the film has a fairly fast start in that there is no shortage of action and suspense in the first few minutes. Joel Schumacher shot this great little movie in 28 days on a tiny budget. It is a fantastic story that keeps the viewer glued to the screen. The director takes pains at the beginning of the film to paint Farrell's character as a lying, manipulative self-centered lowlife. The director breaks with the stereotypical formula in which the killer's victims are innocents who draw the audiences' sympathy, by painting Farrell as a cheating worm, Schumacher cleverly inverts the formula so that the audience actually enjoys watching the victim squirm. This is exciting movie making on a basic level.

Even though this movie starts off with the usual: something goes wrong, spacecraft crashes, people are stranded etc. it still pulls off and introduces the viewer to some new ideas. Riddick is somewhat of a badass convict and has modified his eyes so he is able to see in the dark which is a sought after ability in the situation the shipcrew and he is in. The cutting in the movie is very good and emphasizes the mystique that shrouds around the anti-hero and male protagonist: "Riddick." The story in Pitch Black is, as already mentioned, to some extent very unoriginal and dissatisfied, but the clipping and cutting in the movie blended with some surprising elements which has been added to the story helps it to still support itself very well and one is afterwards left behind ... Feast Of Love [2007]

I don't like chick flicks, but in saying that I found this interesting, moving and inspiring.

Morgan Freeman's character, Harry, acts as the guide through the stories of Greg Kinnear's character Bradley (who I couldn't care less about) and his various relationships; and Kathryn (Selmer Blair) and her relationship with Oscar (Toby Hemingway).

It is the latter relationship that I found to be the best. The two actors involved Hemingway and Blair outshone all of the others, including Freeman.

I'm glad I gave it a try.

Melinda And Melinda [2004]

Whilst many have felt that this film isn't as edgy as other Woody Allen films, the characters still display his trademark style of being analytical and neurotic.

The characters are the result of a dinner table discussion between four writers, two of which are arguing the case for life being conveyed as a comedy or a tragedy. One of the writers gives the example a woman bursting into a house during a dinner party, the arguing pair then develop their own versions of the story using their own spin.

At first this seems to be a story about femininity and masculinity - with the 'comedy' scenario having a husband who seems to have the traditional wife role in a cold relationship, and the 'tragedy' scenario having a loving wife who is being cheated on.

Needless to say, after having watched Black Water and now Rogue (very different - and very good - movies from the land Down Under) on consecutive days, I will not be planning any vacation in Australia's Northern Territory any time soon. Frankly, I don't understand why so many people who have no business wandering into "the wild" seem to enjoy taking wilderness cruises and seeing some of nature's most efficient killers for themselves. I learned all l need to know about crocodiles from Steve Irwin. Of course, the characters in this movie thought they were safe in their little tour boat, but I wouldn't trust the freakin' Love Boat in croc-infested waters - not salties, at any rate. Phone Booth is an unsettling look at how technology can catch people out, and how you think you're safe when really you're not. Stu is an obnoxious fashion-obsessed compulsive liar who cheats on his wife, tells his clients what they want to hear and just generally tries to feather his nest as much as he can. One guy, "the caller", really has had enough of this guy and wants to teach him a vital lesson. He confines Stu to the phone booth, and makes him wish he'd never bothered going in there.

This is a great movie, excellently written and very emotional. Colin Farrell's desperation is great, and he has some funny lines. Kiefer Sutherland as the caller is great too, he's really got the skills for this film and he shines as the uncompromising voice who's really out to get ... Read More:

I think the synopsis on the back of the DVD is rather misleading, as there really isn't lots of action. However, as the story got going I forgot about the disappointment of it not being what I though, and ended up really enjoying it. To any 24 fans looking to buy it; it shows a different side to Kiefer Sutherland, and this character is nothing like Jack Bauer. But I loved this film anyway.
