North by Northwest is one of Hitchcock's great thrillers. Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint star. The mistaken identity plot plays well to Grants strengths as the man confused by the insistence of others that he is George Kaplan, the mysterious spy. The balance between thriller and comedy is very well judged. The look of this movie is the key to its success along with the many set pieces. The frantic struggle of Grant against the hood's attempts to pour a bottle of scotch down his throat conveys real violence and panic.
I Confess is better remembered for its star, Montgomery Clift, than as one of Hitchcock's great movies but it is still powerful stuff. The theme is a strong one that has been copied and adapted elsewhere. Clift's character ... Read More:

A brilliant film with a moral message that is as true today as it was when the movie was made.
The grass is not always greener...and you will live to regret hurting the one person who really loved you!!!

Based on R.C Sherriff's play 'Journey's end', Aces High is a gripping introduction for anyone wanting an insight into air combat during the First World war. A young Colin Firth is wonderful as the fledgling hero 'Croft' and McDowell proves once again that he is one of the U.K's most underrated actors. Christopher Plummer gives another highly polished performance.
As in Journey's end the idealistic youngster joins the unit commanded by a man well known to him and his family, his sister's fiancee, who is now a decorated and experienced fighter. The youngster's idealism fades however as he realizes that in spite of his friend's success in the war, Greasham is close to breaking point. The movie shows very well how young pilots with insufficient training, ... Read More:

Battlestar Galactica was one of those late 70s / early 80s shows which quickly entered into popular culture. It has an excellent cast, including Starbuck (played by Dirk Benedict) who is a smoking, drinking, gambling, womanising pilot (with marked similarities to the Han Solo persona) and the more serious Captain Apollo (Richard Hatch) who is son of Commander Ardama (more like the serious foil / Luke Skywalker role). Commander Adama (Lorne Greene - from Bonanza) plays the main role as the serious commander of the Galactica ship.
Despite all the song and dance made of the similarity with Star Wars (Ep IV), this is a separate idea, and has more in common with a US military operation which operates like an aircraft carrier. The nice twist here is that they ... Read More:

If this was the first Steve Martin film I had ever seen I would have missed some of his really good ones because I wouldn't have bothered with any others. I thought the only good thing about it was the way old films were so cleverly used to bring in many old stars that only a granny like me would recognise. This one wont be watched again.

Ray Milland delivers his finest performance in this 1945 drama. Even over 60 years later, it remains believable, tense and hard-hitting. A must for all Jane Wyman fans, too.

Beginning with Season 2, Universal began releasing syndication cut episodes as "complete and uncut" episodes. In the United States back in the 70's the Columbo episodes typically were aired in a 90 minute format; later on it was 120 minutes. Of those 90 minutes, 8 minutes were taken out for commercials. In syndication, and additional 8 minutes were cut for commercials; hence 74 minutes. In some episodes, characters are introduced as having been in the episode earlier...though you never see the initial introduction of the character. This gets worse with the later episodes in later sets that aired in 2 hour time slots. Be careful when you buy these. I contacted Universal and they refused to refund money. They also refused to admit that they had issued "cut and edited" episodes as "complete ... Read More:

A old classic movie, betrayed by this poor DVD version. The plot is an adaptament of a Wilbur Smith's classic book ("perhaps" non between the bests). BTW why make so "bad" movies from very good action books (like Smith's or Cussler's books) ???. This film has a good cast and good action scenes (for that time). But the DVD in too poor, expecially for for audio and subtitles lacking

I had no idea what to expect when I bought this but I got a result! This film involves you from the beginning. There are some very good scenes and it is a typical film noir. Ray Milland is good in the lead, as always (see "The Uninvited" from 1944 if you can), and the plot twists and turns so that you suspect different people at different times. The only let-down is Marjorie Reynolds unnecessarily affecting a terrible German accent for the duration of the film - shame! Apart from that, I'm glad I bought it and both my girlfriend and I will be watching it again. Another good film from 1944.
