Exellent conversion to Blu-ray. A bit grainy in parts but gives this classic film a new lease of life. Close Encounters Of The Third Kind (30th Anniversary Ultimate Edition) [Blu-ray] [1977]
Release Date October 25, 1999
Watched this a few years back but couldn't get on with the animation style. It was bought as a present for my 4yo who loves it. On re-watching I didn't have the same animation prejudice simply because Tim Burton has made it more 'acceptable'. Shallow of me I know but there you go.
The Aunts are fantastic in the 'real-life' section although I couldn't get on with the boy. Pete Postlethwaite still gives me the creeps (although that's from the Sharpe TV series rather than this film).
In the animated section the bugs are all pretty good and the boy gets better.
The songs are OK but I didn't find them particularly catchy.

Anyone who is a fan of the timeless, majestic, Frank L.Baum classic 'The Wizard of Oz' should see this. Where the wonderful Musical 'Wicked' only undermines the positive feelings we have for 'Oz' - Tin man re-inforces just how good the original 70 year old (?) Classic film is. This remake combines disappointingly poor direction from Englishman Nick Willing, who seems completely divorced from the original story; an appaling script from Sickle & Mitchell (may namesake!); and a completely cardboard lead from Zooey Deschanel supported by a convincingly awful Allan Cumming - who proves once and for all his Tony's are about being in the right place at the right time. He is a cringingly awful half attempt at a character actor, who makes 'Karaoke' seem ... Read More:

Special effects should be convincing, even when this was made, but relying on an upside down turned car and mashed tatties and dodgy miniatures spoils the story. As if aliens are going to travel all this way after kidnapping pilots and sailors just to have a jam session on top of a mountain with a hippy scientist and his organ. Like Jean Michel Jarre and ET having a duet. Its silly. Aliens also are supposed to be green and not like the ones here. Aliens are hardly going to visit us if this is what we think of them. Unless they are the For Mash Get Smash aliens which is where the mashed potato could actually mean something.

This film should have been awful but is nearer to a classic.
Michael Douglas gives another top notch performance startillingly similar to all his other performances. Rather than a critisism, an acknowledgement that Michael Douglas knows what he's good at and does it very well.
Douglas and co-star Annette Benning create the irresistable on screen chemistry and illuminate an enchanting tale.
In reality The American President is more of a modern fairytale than realistic drama.
Leaves you a little sad that that is the case.

I didn't expect a masterpiece with this movie and I certainly didn't get one. What I did get though was a pretty entertaining 90 minutes or so.It was much as I expected it to be and in that sense 'Poseidon' did it's job.
The acting is hammy at times, the dialogue is cheesy in the extreme and the storyline is overly familiar. But the effects are OK,the action kicks in quickly and the movie isn't overlong. As stated earlier, this isn't a masterpiece by any stretch of the imagination but as a piece of Saturday night entertainment it definitely does it's job.
Watch it,forget about it but be prepared to be entertained for a short while. Not bad.

George Lucas doeesn't have many directorial credits to his name, and quite frankly his credits outside of the star wars and Indy franchises are almost non-existent. But this movie is surely one of his best. The reason I say 'one of' is because I cant decide whether 'raiders of the lost ark' beats this to my number 1 fav movie spot.
So why does is this movie so magical for me?, well the time period and setting is something I can relate to even though I'm not american and wasnt born in the 50s. I guess certain things are universally similar for people growing up no matter what age or region and this movie showcases some of the poignant aspects of ealy manhood very well. The characters are lovable in their own ways, the script and dialogue is warm and believable. The actors are ... Read More:
