A very sweet movie that focuses on the life of young, newly orphaned Albert who is sent to live with his godmother Harriet in New Jersey. Still traumatised over his mother's sudden death, Albert finds solace in a new friend, the playful, caring and loyal Frenchman, Bogus. The catch? Bogus is imaginary.
An early start for a pre-'Sixth Sense' Haley Joel Osment who shows considerable talent as the lonely, distrustful Albert. Gerard Depardieu is delightfully endearing as his imaginary friend and Whoopi Goldberg is believeable as the no-nonsense businesswoman who must learn to embrace the child within if she is to help Albert emerge from the shell he has built for himself. Both funny and touching, this movie is sentimental without descending ... Read More:

Two short films, one directed by Peter Greenaway ("M..."), the other featuring music by Michael Nyman ("Letters...") both shed new light on the life of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. In "Letters, Riddles and Writs" Ute Lemper portrays the famous composer excellently, while the issue of plagiarism is challenged from a highly unusual perspective... Music and picture combine exquisitely in both shorts, underlining the artistry of both Greenaway and Nyman as well as solidifying Lemper's position as an outstanding singer and actress.

The director of this film (James Merendino) wished to remain anonymous -hence the use of the name Allen Smithee in the publicity. It is clear to see why the Meredino decided not to have his name attached to this tedious work. The script never really gets beyond the mundane; it is stilted and gives the impression of being written by a group of drama students extemporising on the nature of relationships. The line "I prefer warm hearted conversation to frigid sex anytime ..." may have been said with a slight irony (the line ends "...actually I'm lying"). But when you realise that this is the best line in the movie you realise that you are in for a tedious view.
The story is, ostensibly, about a dying lawyer (Thaddeus MacKenzie, played ... Read More:

This video gives great coverage of the work of Kurt Weill composed in the first half of the 20th.Century and tracking Kurt's migration from Germany, via Paris to the golden land of the USA.
The video's presentation is stark and makes no concession to people whose skill in French and German languages is not so great as Ute's.
The Vides notes are great as they outline the background of Weill's life and times and give some indication as to Ute's links between the songs.
For the serious student, check out Ute's Kurt Weill CD's ( which include English language translations ). "Ute Lemper Sings Kurt Weill" and "Ute Lemper signs Kurt Weil No 2."
Away from Weill and Brecht, but still with Ute, a ... Read More:
