The Snow Queen [2003] (REGION 1) (NTSC)

starring: Bridget Fonda, Jeremy Guilbaut, Chelsea Hobbs, Robert Wisden, Wanda Cannon
directed by: David Wu

Release Date January 21, 2003
What a marvellous story and what a marvellous rendition. I loved everyone in it especially the young hero in my case and so pleased to see a bit of natural, unforced iceskating - which was how I quickly spotted it was a Canadian show. There's something about Canadian movies that's subtly different from USA and you quickly notice, don't you? (Not slagging off US movies here, just pointing out they are different!) I hadn't known the story before (how did I miss it?) but my husband recalled it from childhood and if anything loved it even more than I did.

A DVD worth owning.

The 6th Day [2000]

starring: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Michael Rapaport, Tony Goldwyn, Michael Rooker, Sarah Wynter
directed by: Roger Spottiswoode

Release Date September 13, 2004
The title, the trailer and the subject matter (cloning) make you wanna see this film. Add to that the fact arnie is in it makes it all the better. HOWEVER, as many have pointed out already, it gently brushes over the real issues of cloning and romps on with the usual explosions, action, chessy lines and the one-man-against-the-system cliche.

It could have been soooo much better but as it is, its a good film by Arnie. Lets hope his final movie outing before politics takes over full-time is better.

DeVour [2005] (REGION 1) (NTSC)

starring: Jensen Ackles, Shannyn Sossamon, Dominique Swain, William Sadler, Teach Grant
directed by: David Winkler

Release Date May 31, 2005
Lukewarm pretty much sums this movie up. You won't exactly devour this movie, but it's certainly palatable. By playing it safe at every turn, Devour avoids making glaring mistakes, but it also limits itself from doing anything worth getting excited about. The whole thing is rather formulaic and predictable, so your big payoff at the end consists of little more than a "Yep, knew it" moment. There may be a few elements of very mild suspense, but horror fans won't find much gore here at all - there are a couple of pretty cool deaths, but all we get to see are the staged after-effects.

The premise has been done several times before, but I still like it - and I'm still waiting for someone to really get it right. The objective is to take a computer ... Read More:
