Oh! What a Lovely War: The Special Collector's Edition

starring: Wendy Allnutt, Colin Farrell, Corin Redgrave, Maurice Roëves, Malcolm McFee
directed by: Richard Attenborough

Release Date January 23, 2007
I'm bemused by the tendency to assert that this film is a veiled Vietnam film, "ostensibly" about another war, as this Amazon review puts it. It IS about another war, one that was far more important to the nation where it was written and filmed, and in which the father of writer and director Charles Chilton was killed. Anyway, I watched it as a First World War film, and that is how it has always seemed to me: it comments on all other wars, implicitly, of course.

It's silly to compare or measure this against most other war films, because it is so unlike any other, but it stands out as a dramatic, cinematic, narrative gem. A serious musical about the horrors of war: sounds as likely as a serious musical about living in Nazi Germany. ... Read More:

When Eight Bells Toll [1971]

starring: Anthony Hopkins, Jack Hawkins, Robert Morley, Nathalie Delon, Corin Redgrave
directed by: Etienne Périer

Release Date May 17, 2004
This is a cracking little thriller.Anthony Hopkins makes for a somewhat muted and distant hero. However he utterly convinces in the action department. One fight scene set in a cemetary although clumsily staged looks authentic. For me the real highlight is Robert Morley's turn as Hopkins Whitehall spy chief. What a wonderful actor he was and this semi comedic role is a fitting memory of him.
Other attributes of this film, the scottish locations. The helicopter sequence when Hopkins is searching the coastline almost has a documentary feel to it. Also Sir Anthony looks like he could handle himself if push came to shove. Well worth a look and at an attracive price.

From Beyond The Grave [1973]

starring: Wendy Allnutt, Rosalind Ayres, Ian Bannen, Ian Carmichael, Peter Cushing
directed by: Kevin Connor

Release Date October 15, 2007
Bought this about 2 years ago and if I ever need frightening I will always put this on, this compilation has 4 stories all interwieved by the excellent Peter Cushing as the owner of an antique shop ,
The first story has David Warner buying a mirror and finding a ghost in the mirror from the past wanting dead bodies to eat a 5/5 story for me ,brilliant.
2nd story stars Donald Pleasence, Diana Dors and Ian Bannen, this involves Ian Bannen pretending he`s a war hero and has weedelling his way into the affections of Pleasences real life daughter Angela with dire consquences.
Story 3 is the worst where Ian Carmichael is haunted by a sort of invisible gremlin, this one is why i`ve given this review 4 stars.

The last story is where ... Read More:

starring: Stephanie Turner, Wendy Allnutt, Iain Blair, Rebekah Blair, Noel Collins
directed by: Carol Wilks, David Reynolds, Derek Lister, Geraint Morris, Jonathan Alwyn

Release Date September 12, 2005
I really enjoyed this series and after catching a few episodes on cable, decided to buy this first series on DVD and I have really enjoyed it.
Juliet Bravo was a drama series about woman police inspector,Jean Darbley(Stephanie Turner)arriving in the Yorkshire town of Hartley and dealing with sexist comments and in particular, one Sergeant Beck,(David Ellison)who treats her like bad smell in the opening episode.
Things get off to a bad start, for Jean,in the opening episode,a man commits suicide after seizing his daughter, and Stephanie Turner potrays the anguish very well.
The late, great Patricia Hayes makes a guest appearance in the 2nd episode as a darling old Irish woman, who has been stealing cheques from her work because a local rogue has been kind ... Read More:

Priest Of Love [1982]

A thoroughly researched, lovingly crafted DVD. A lovely film (great performances from all the cast) and a huge amount of extras (behind the scenes feature, paintings by D H Lawrence, interviews with McKellen and the director, nice booklet, outakes, deleted scenes, photo gallery and more. A terrific DVD, if only more films were given this sort of care. Highly recommended.
