A thoroughly enjoyable musical, though not without faults. Aside from Effie (Jennifer Hudson) and Curtis (Jamie Foxx) the characters were badly under-developed, which made the storyline seem jerky. The direction kept switching between musical styles: sometimes it was played as a traditional musical with characters bursting into song mid-sentence, at other times dialogue was spoken with musical numbers kept on stage or in a recording studio.
I'm not sure if some scenes were cut to make way for all the musical numbers (there are a LOT of songs, even for a musical) but some great acting toward the end of the film was too little too late for those characters. For instance Deena (Beyonce Knowles) is a pretty face who doesn't say much ... Read More:

I've watched this film a couple of times since i've had it, i knew it was going to be brilliant, so i invested a little bit more in getting the 2 - disc showstopper edition, and i'm certainly glad i did.
Back in 1981 this film was originally performed as a Broadway musical, written by Tom Eyen and staring Jennifer Holiday, since then it has had a number of changes & new features added to it, the person most responsible for these changes being screenwriter & director Bill Condon, who I must point out did a brilliant job in bringing Dreamgirls to the big screen, the story itself is set in the 60's, has strong references to Motown, and is reminiscent of the Diana Ross and the Supremes era.

As New Orleans is getting ready for Mardi Graus, art teacher Annie Tarrant, (Kelly Rowan) is worried that her brother Ethan, (William O'Leary) won't stay out of trouble long enough to help her long enough to find her missing father. As she begins looking back on her childhood to find answers, she comes into repeated contact with the legend of Daniel Robitaille, the Candyman, (Tony Todd) and she can't understand why. As more bodies pile up and she begins seeing the Candyman appearing at all the murder locations and even haunting her, she looks to the past to stop the madman.
The Good News: The "Candyman" series, I think, is actually pretty underrated, and this one is pretty good. The fact that this one goes back to his origins and explains ... Read More:

Expecting this to be a funny and honest film about sexual behaviour I was annoyed to find out that hardly any of it made me laugh! Liam Neeson drove me crazy with his weird, pretentious attitude to sex and his wife didn't entertain me much more. Not even a sexy film. I wouldn't bother!

I bought this from Amazon.com about 3 weeks ago. The first time I viewed the film I thought I had made a bad choice because it was hard to hear some of the dialogue due to background effects. That aside however, I found the HD quality very good and the vocals and acting are excellent. A lot of the dialogue is sung rather than spoken which adds to the enjoyment. Disc 2 is also filmed in HD and has excerpts from the screen tests as well as interviews with the wardrobe designers, set designers etc. All in all, a very enjoyable film. Especially if you like musicals.

What is a point for buying BD if poor sound quality,
especially the film like this.
Should have LPCM, or lossless compression at least.

The name of Alfred Kinsey conjures up many different kinds of images and preconceived notions, many of which don't fit the reality of his research and situation. The Kinsey Institute, located on the campus of my undergraduate university in Indiana, is known the world over as a research centre devoted to looking at sex in humans. This can still be a controversial topic, but certainly for middle America during the middle of the twentieth century - this was the protestant 'Bible Belt', and sex was not a topic of proper conversation among educated people.
Written and directed by Bill Condon, this film recounts the tale of Kinsey's professional career, from his early days as a Harvard researcher looking at gall wasps through his career at Indiana University, first ... Read More:
