I purchased this set of classic Universal Mummy movies quite recently and was disapointed to discover that the second of the two disc was unplayable. So I missed the other four in the series. The first disc with the original MUMMY and the documentary Mummy Dearest was ok and very enjoyable.
Beware of the Curse of the Mummy DVD set! I suspect that it will take more than Tanna leaves to deal with the faulty DVD pressings.

That might sound harsh and a spit in the collective genre eye to Karloff and Chaney but it is said with conviction. 'The Mummy's Hand' is an improvement on the original in that the supernatural element is less drastic (only one dimension instead of two). Certainly, it's far less serial/comic strip than the Chaney entries and let's not even try and compare it to the Abbott and Costello stuff.
Tyler makes a convincing mummy, although it must be said that of all the monsters to confront make-up technicians of the Thirties and Forties, the Egyptian proved the hardest to create. Zucco produces one of his best performances as the wicked, freshly appointed High Priest.
On the protagonist side, the Foran-Moran-Ford-Kellaway team ... Read More:

These two films are really rather poor. Even though they are mercifully short (Hand is 67mins and Tomb is 60mins) they have few redeeming qualities. The acting is at times rather wooden and in the case of the Mummys hand two of the heros are vaguely reminisent of Abbott and Costello. Whether this was intended I very much doubt.
The Mummy itself is a pretty clever makeup creation (no CGI remember) and there are one or two moments in both films where the closeups of the mummys face must have been pretty scary back in the 1940's. However any tension created is soon lost because the films are largely confined to one or two sets and the plots are pretty contrived and disbelief settles in quite quickly when you realise that the Mummy can only ... The Cisco Kid was a sort of Robin Hood character who, with his band of followers brought aid to the poor and oppressed villagers and confronted the corrupt landowners and figures of authority who were responsible for their oppression.
Gilbert Roland was of Mexican descent and had a certain charm, so it was not surprising that he was chosen to play the Cisco Kid in six films for Monogram Pictures between 1946 and 1947. The films are each around one hour long and are generally slow-paced, talky and melodramatic, with some action scenes. The Kid and his men also sing a riding song as they go on their merry way. Mr.Roland delivers his lines in a rather sleepy fashion, but he cuts a dashing figure and the films are entertaining enough to keep you interested ... Read More:

The print of this film isnt fantastic but as its a cheap dvd and the only version currently available I cant really complain, its nice just to be able to see this film at long last. I always wanted to see it because of the fabulous COLIN CLIVE who was a fabulous actor but sadly very little of his work is available for us fans to see outside of the first 2 Universal FRANKENSTEIN movies. Im pleased to say though, hes just as good in this...very watchable...though the film is rather short (just over an hour) and naturally concentrates mostly on the JANE EYRE character..played by VIRGINA BRUCE. Cant say I was very impressed with her performance, instantly forgettable, and as for that obnoxious child she is tutoring, in once scene the little annoyance falls into a ... Read More:

I just noticed that this particular presentation is stated being in black and white. Be sure you purchase a copy which is in colour! At least amazon.com sells some versions, and they're usuall region free. I hate to think how this film must look like when in B/W. The colours are one of the main aspects of this entertaining film.

It's definitely one of my favorites of all time because it's got stuff that most movies don't have: Everything. MGM and company unintentionally created a work of popular art that could only be fully appreciated in its original, pristine print, 70mm, super widescreen glory. It is no longer possible to make a film like Ben-Hur. Oh, George Lucas tries with all his computerized graphics, but this is a REAL spectacle, not some virtual one. 8,000 extras, tens of thousands of costumes, a $15 million budget (in the 1950's!), massive sets depict the power of Rome on the grandest possible scale. It took six years to complete production. Yet, its focus remains sharply on the detail, the private human experience of it all. The story doesn't get lost in the enormous vision ... Read More:
