"I go to visit an old friend," says Dr. Vitus Werdegast to Peter and Joan Alison, the young newlyweds he meets on the train moving through a rain-swept night. Their destination is the small, picturesque village of Vizhegrad that had been the site of a horrendous battle during the Great War. They board a bus and the driver tells them, "All of this country was one of the greatest battlefields of the war. Tens of thousands of men died here. The ravine down there was piled twelve deep with dead and wounded men. The little river below was swollen red, a raging torrent of blood. And that high hill yonder where Engineer Poelzig now lives was the site of Fort Marmorus. He built his home on its very foundations. Marmorus, the greatest graveyard in the ... Read More:

If you enjoy classic silent cinema then you won't want to miss this. At times the odd scene is reminiscent of King Vidor's The Crowd, made just the year before (most especially in those moments set indoors, during which one of the couples gently bicker or the scene during which the principals first meet up for their group date); while at others the open air, carefree mood is suggestive of Renoir's masterpiece Partie de Campagne, made a decade later. But People on Sunday is a distinct work in its own right, an evocative film made by some stellar talent as already noted by other reviewers here: the Siodmak brothers, Edgar Ulmer, Billy Wilder and Fred Zimmerman - all of whom would go on to varying degrees of success in the States after fleeing the Nazis. ... I read the reviews here and elsewhere beforehand - thinking that the quality can't be *that* bad. Turns out some of the films are indeed downright unwatchable. I don't mind a little grit, but the fuzziness going on here is astonishing. I'll probably end up watching about half of the films before passing the whole thing on. At good quality this box would be worth four times as much. OK value, but beware.

My low rating is not for the film itself, but for this DVD release. It is transfered from a pretty damaged print, with scratches and marks in most scenes and even a few missing frames and dropouts in sound. What's worse, there are no subtitles, so I have no way of finding out what lines I missed other than searching online for the script. Most disappointing, a cult classic deserves better treatment.

The five movies on one DVD disc that make up The Bela Lugosi Collection are great fun and a great bargain. The price is worth it even if you're only interested in one or two of them. The two for me are The Black Cat and Murders in the Rue Morgue.
Black Cat, The (1934):

I like all the classic epic movies like Ben Hur, The Vikings & Spartacus. I was aware Victor Mature done a movie about Hannibal and could not find it anywhere. I finally got it from Amazon and instantly realised why it isn't as readily available as the other epics. The worst thing in this movie is the unconvincing battle scenes, with some of the worst extras I've ever seen , the story line is also terrible so give this one a miss.
