Firstly, let me say that I am an enormous Stephen King fan. I am currently re-reading his back catalogue and I believe his skills at characterisation and character-driven plots are unsurpassed and that some of his books have been made into fantastic films (The Green Mile anyone?) However, this was not one of them.
The lack of excitement and pace were palpable almost from the offset and sadly not helped by the wooden acting of most of the characters. I wouldn't have even minded it not being scary if it had effectively shown the breakdown of different people and personalities, but i didn't feel that this was explored with enough power to make you actually empathise with any of the characters.

As you can tell from the other people's reviews this movie is brilliant!!
But what is not said (at least I don't think so! I didd'nt read all 100+ reviews!) is the picture quality! i'm using a Toshiba 47" 1080i LCD HDTV with a PlayStation3 with HDMI connection.

For a DVD it's got AMAZING detail! I'm surprised they managed to fit this 3 hour film with this quality onto a DVD!! I have a collection of around 500 DVDs & this must be in the top 5 of best picture quality in my selection!

Buy it! you won't regret it! (or wait for the Blu-ray)

Director Frank Darabont's enthusiasm for this project virtually drips off this 2 Disc edition. If you missed this in cinemas I would recommend this to any fan of intelligent horror as a must-buy for your collection. The picture did fairly well at the world-wide box office ($57 million) from a budget of $18 million. Stephen King's novels and short stories have normally been adapted for the small screen so it is to the credit of Weinstein Company that they decided to shoot one of his stories for the big screen and give Frank Darabont the budget and creative freedom to deliver us the creepy masterclass in suspense that he has done.

This movie is just great, fantastic acting from both Freeman and Robbins. The transfer to high definition isn't the best, but it is fantastic considering this film is now nearly 15 years old, the grayness and dullness of Shawshank State Prison is seen like live I've seen it before, the dark colors are really clear, however seeing how they didn't have HD cameras back then some of the scenes can look a bit blurry and unclear but most of the time its not very noticeable.

7/10 for audio - Good, but i think it could've been better

8/10 for picture - regarding the films age is good but could be better

9/10 the movie it-self - great, entertaining, with twists and turns
but at times can feel a little bit boring

I won't provide a synopsis as there is already one provided on Amazon.
I got this on US import in a 2 disc edition which contains the original version and a black and white version of the film (Frank Darabont wanted to release it in black and white but the studio was not happy with this idea, "the kids" don't "get" black and white apparently!!)and I would definitely recommend tracking this edition down.The film itself is most definitely a homage to '50's and '60's monster B-movies, and does not take itself too seriously, but is obviously made with great care and love by Darabont. The effects are not top notch, but that really doesn't matter as you find yourself so engrossed in the panic of the characters and their interactions with each other.It has been said many times, but the ending ... Wow! If one word describes The Mist's ability to shock and scare the watcher then this is it. Contrary to some reviews I believe the script is very well thought out and interesting showing what happens when society breaks down and although the special effects start out a little bit on the cheap side they get better and better including a stunning sequence involving flying bugs. Unlike other horror movies it does sort of touch upon why it's happening and has an absolutely amazing ending that no-one would see coming. The americans didn't like the shock ending but is in complete contrast to other god awful endings. (No Country for old men and There will be Blood being prime examples!)
