Earth vs The Flying Saucers [1956]

starring: Hugh Marlowe, Joan Taylor, Donald Curtis, Morris Ankrum, John Zaremba
directed by: Fred F. Sears

Release Date October 14, 2002
----the above statement---lifted wholesale from actual dialogue within the movie itself-----sums up perfectly the overall tone of this lurid but luxuriating, epic opus from RAY HARRYHAUSEN.

Essentially a briskly bludgeoning comic-strip treatment [riddled with dubious 1950s Mc Carthy-style paranoia] the entertainment level never seriously relents, and the whole is a vigorously dynamic, one-off romp, in which RAY'S ingenious skills are utilized to novel, highly unusual effect: ie, the animated attractions are spinning saucers, with not a whiff of a 'standard' articulated model-creature.

I ntruiging use of actual mid-air carnage [in which there MUST have been some real-life casualties] are used as background plates to ... Read More:

This is the process how movies made in black and white are transformed into colour. A common reaction among film fans to this is similar to that of an animal lover watching their favourite pet tortured to death; it is a vile and disgusting abomination.

I'd never seen a colourised movie before I bought this set of three of Ray Harryhausen's earliest full length movies. And you know what? I like it just fine. No doubt it helps that the process was supervised by the man himself who stated that if they'd had the money they would have been filmed in colour in the first place. Also technology has improved since the process was first invented so if you didn't know that these were originally made in b/w you almost certainly wouldn't be able ... Read More:

When i first saw these films in the 50s, i was really impressed, ( Well, i was 17 ) Now having seen them almost 50 years later, what can i say. "Rock around the clock" stands the test of time the best, the story is corny but the dancing, it is wonderful, i fast forward just to see the dancing. ( Oh, if only i could have danced like that ). The groups and the music, great. "Don,t knock the rock", well, i must admit it was a little bit cringe time and at times downright embarrasing but what do you expect from cheap budget. It was the music, the groups, and the dancing what saved it. Because you lived through it, you have got to have it. Today, a teenager would not give it the time of day. It will remain what it is, a curiosity.

See each of my individual reviews for a more complete description of each film.

There is a unique Harry type movie that is unmistakable; it is better than Gumby but not quite today's CGI. Like those that prefer black and white films for either art or nostalgia. And there are Ray Harryhausen connoisseurs.

If it is possible that you are not familiar with Ray, he is a master at creating those cute little monsters, and saucers from stop-motion. And this would make a great starter collection.
