Now first a brief outline of the story..... First there was a little Scarecrow called Worzel Gummidge (played by the late and great Jon Pertwee) who's job as it happens is to be a scarecrow in Ten Acre Field but he on the other hand has other ideas. He takes every opportunity to leave the crows to have the field and he gets up to many adventures with the help of his two titchy human friends (Sue is played by the late Charlotte Coleman and John played by Jeremy Austin). Worzel was made by his father figure "The Crowman" (played by Geoffrey Bayldon of Catweazle fame) who makes all of the Scarecrows in the land and with a little country magic names them and they come to life. All the scarecrows are very respectfull of the Crowman for giving them ... Read More:

Having received Series 1 as a Christmas gift from my sister (prompted by me!) I realised that I had to buy Series 2 to quench my thirst for more!
With two little boys aged 5 and 2, I was very much looking forward to showing them my favourite childhood show from my girlhood more than 20 years ago. I was thrilled that they sat still, glued to the television for each episode without any fidgeting. I think that the simplicity of the storylines and easy-going viewing is a rare thing to our children, their usual programmes are so fast-paced and action packed that these lovely episodes of fun and mischief are a change for them - easy going and very, very watchable.
I must admit, I had forgotten quite how horrible Worzel and Aunt Sally are to ... Read More:

This story shows Jon Pertwee in his classic role as a true comic actor. With the abundance of other stars who support him in the way that only "stars" can "A Cup O' Tea An' A Slice O' Cake" is entertainment that will keep kids (of all ages) entertained time and time again.
Whether or not you have read the original Worzel stories (why not search for them!) you will find this interpretation is true to the spirit (sorry, the "cup of tea") that Barbara Euphan Todd portrayed so well in the original printed form, but adapted for the TV screen in a way that used the talents of the late great Jon Pertwee to bring the scarecrow fully alive.

I saw this at the cinema, and bought it when it was first released on VHS.
I remember a quite nasty scene along the railway in the film which shocked me at the time, and this was definately cut on the video. I have yet to see the dvd, but judging from the previous letter it seems to be still cut. That scene had a huge impact on the film, and to cut it is ridiculous.
The picture itself is a very warming film, with superb acting by all concerned, and yet it seems to have been forgotten.
There are some scenes that even now will upset younger people, and even many older ones.
The story isn't exactly mind blowing, but it's a really beautiful film that once seen, you will never forget. hankies ready while you all watch please

Far inferior to Bob Clark's later Murder By Decree (1979), this first cinematic attempt to pit Sherlock Holmes against Jack the Ripper is a reasonably exciting horror thriller in its own right, but is let down by an unimaginitive plot and the rather too broad playing of the lead actors. Compared to the deadly straight team of Peter Cushing and Andre Morell, Holmes and Watson in the Hammer version of The Hound of the Baskervilles made just a few years earlier, John Neville and Donald Houston play the central roles with their tongues firmly in their cheeks. Houston in particular goes the Nigel Bruce route in his playing of Watson, his flamboyant pomposity unsuited to the grim subject matter of the story. Robert Morley, too, goes for overt comedy with his Mycroft ... Read More:

This box set is even better than the first. It contains some smashing episodes of my favourite series of all time. In "The Living Dead" Emma gets imprisoned in an underground city but escapes just in time to rescue Steed. The marvellous episode "The Hidden Tiger" is also included in this set. It's absolutely a five star episode in which cats can be turned into ferocious wild animals by remote control. The school for gentlemen from "The Correct Way to Kill" is also absolutely a highlight in the Avengers Series. In "Never, Never Say Die" Christopher Lee gets run down by a car twice. "Epic" is, just like "The Joker" (not included on this set), one of those episodes I most fondly remember. It's a wonderful Emma Peel episode in which see makes a movie whether see likes ... This is the third smashing box set of "The Avengers" first colour season. And I have to say it's a great one. Sound quality is good considering this series were made more than three decennia ago. But the episode "Return of the Cybernauts" features some nasty distortion (probably a Dolby digital encoding error). Picture quality is good. Picture is sharp and colours are bright. The extras include a wonderful picture gallery. But I still find the "Follow That Hat" feature a little disappointing. All in all this is a worthy addition to your collection!
"A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Station" is a nice homage to train mysteries such as Hitchcock's "The Lady Vanishes". The plot maybe thin but this episode is quite enjoyable with a good eccentric John ... Read More:
