Yet another classic Laurel & Hardy film. Stan has stayed on the trenches in WWI France for many years without realising the war had ended. He finally gets brought home to be met by Oli who feels sorry for him and promises that his wife will cook him a nice meal. However, things don't quite work out that way as Oli's better half doesn't like Stan very much and promptly leaves Oli. Stan also causes Oli to get beaten up in a street-brawl with our favourite supporting actor James Findlayson, and by one of the neighbours. The despondent looks on Oli's face every time things go wrong are just priceless. The movie was also watchable in colour but it doesn't quite seem right or necessary as these movies are more at home in black and white.

The main feature here is nowhere near L&H at their best; it sees them in a period of transition, looking for a wider appeal via pointless musical numbers, pointless romance and pointless interaction with animals. `I've seen the seven wonders of the world and yet / I can't get over the Alps!' They don't write `em like that any more. The boys' personae and routines are becoming more childish, leaving behind the bleak realistic world of their Depression films.
Nevertheless I like it, full as it is of endearing oddments like the St Bernard `rescue' scene and Ollie's tuba-accompanied serenade `Let Me Call You Sweetheart' (the chimp & piano set piece, though, is frankly tedious). If you're a fan, you'll enjoy it.

You know it will be a good film when you know that James Cagney is in it. And this little known gem is an example of how even his earlier work was performed with that Cagney touch. Plus you get to see Cagney's tough man stance very early in his career.!A good film, have a look.

Chapeau bas Mr Keaton.

Swiss Miss is a well directed film, and when you watch the first scene it is hard to belive it's over 70 years old. But the crucial problem here is it's scattiness. There are some classic scenes such as the piano-across-the-bridge routine, the part where Stan tries to con brandy from a rescue dog, and the cheese makers shop scene. Other foul parts include the wasteful romance scenes and pointless songs (although they are fun to listen to!) The very end surprise made me laugh but I won't give it away! I really want to integrate the good parts into a short, fast paced version. It's either a high three stars or a low four stars rating.
