Kevin Costner has always been one of those actors you either love or hate, much like the singing and celebrity of Victoria Beckham or Marmite.
It is unfortunate then, that it is these personal feelings which cloud judgement about whether or not to see a film. Because, in a time when the idea of race relations is once again at the forefront of the news, this simple story of a man open to change can tell us a lot.
Lt John Dunbar (Coster) is a civil war hero. Given the choice of outpost as a reward for a selfless act on the battlefield, he picks the furthest place he can find, the prairee. Also known as Indian country.
Far from being the war-mongering madmen his superiors are presented as, Dunbar is a quiet, ... Read More:

Finally! The first Costner film that you can sit and watch with real pleasure for far too long.
Boss Freeman (Duvall) and Charley Waite (Costner) are Freegrazers (a kind of gypsy cowboy with no ranch) travelling with their herd and companions through the majestic scenery of the Wild West.
What follows has been seen many times before but rarely carried off with such aplomb. Duvall is, as usual, superb and Costner plays the taciturn cowpoke with a violent past much better than Eastwood managed in 'Unforgiven'. Gambon invests the evil town `guvnor' with just the right amount of ham and menace and Bening is in fine fettle as the love interest.
The film builds up the tension slowly, helped by a haunting score, before probably ... Read More:

To quote Jim Carrey in Cable Guy " I don't know what all the fuss was about, I thought that movie rocked, it ruled!". He's not far wrong even if he was a head-case, sure people complained about the scientific liklihood and blah blah. Honestly, who gives a damn ? Kevin Costner fights pirates on jet-ski's in a post-apocalyptic future, it's a cinch that this isn't a Ken Loach film. As such, the stunts effects and set-pieces all are top notch. Downside is that Costner has little in the way of charisma in the lead role, he has a haggard look about him, a bitter disposition and, appropriately maybe for a fish-man, a mullet hairstlye which made me feel ill. Quite ill.. In fact it should lose a point just for that. No that's cruel- i'll stick with it. Seriously , it's better ... Read More:

You're trapped in a shameless parody of Mad Max slash epic western and Kevin Costner's driving he won't even let you stop for a toilet break. The only reason you are watching is because someone has broken your arms and legs and for good measure sewn your eyes open. Yes you guessed its The Postman!! Never in the history of having the choice of watching this or being violently hacked to bits did you choose the wrong option. My favourite example is the bit where Costner rides out of the Mist heroically a look of steely determination on his face as if he was escaping the demons of Hades all shot in glorious slow motion. The whole sequence goes on for what seems like thirty minutes!! You wake up from your coma induced dribbling because you think something is going to happen ... Read More:

Five stars are not enough for this superb film. In fact I would go so far to say that this film is an experience rather than just a movie to go and watch at the cinema. All the way through I was captivated as I have rarely been by any film since childhood, it had that ability to really put you into the country, the sound of hooves or the rumble of the buffalo and the way the leaves rustled and the grass was swept by the wind. It's just such experiences that an adult remembers from their childhood, all those little things which told you that you were alive. This film does this. There is no greater acolade.
