There's little reason to see this Fred Astaire-Eleanor Powell movie except for the dance numbers--and they provide the best reasons in the world. The plot involves a song-and-dance team (Astaire and George Murphy), a Broadway show with a big star (Eleanor Powell), mistaken identity, true friendship and boy gets girl.

Most of the dance numbers, however, are extraordinary, with songs by Cole Porter. Powell sings and taps out "I Am the Captain" in a major production number featuring big sets and lots of chorus boys. She shows why she was a great tap dancer and a major musical star who could carry a movie by herself. No true Elvis fan can be without this film. It's great, wonderful and brilliant! I always wanted to be Juliet Prowse just so I could be with El in this.
As with most Elvis films, the storyline is flimsy beyond belief but who cares when he sings all my favourite songs?
This film, about Elvis' attempts to make money by means of a silly bet, entertains me over and over again. I have never tired of it and also have the album. Elvis will never truly die, thank goodness!!!

Blue Hawaii [1961]

I read on one of those movie review sites that someone hated this film becasue they thought it was to corny.....i have to say that is why i love it..i love the fact that the songs get stuck in your head and my faves are definitely in this film, "Rock-A-Hula Baby" and "Slicin Sand" are amazing...but the people at Paramount are obviously very blind as i noticed the other day when i went to watch it hat it has 3 pictures on the inside sleeve and outside cover of Elvis in Paradise Hawaiian Style, a film that was not made until five years later, so as i also have Paradise Hawaiian Style i decided to check that cover and it also has pictures of Elvis in Blue Hawaii on it......All in all i think that this film is fab and no one should say its bad till ... My mum has been a big Lanza fan since the 50's and has amassed all his recordings on vinyl and then CD and his films on VHS over the years. However, I was able to buy this DVD for her from amazon.com last year when it was first released in the US. She was absolutely delighted! The quality is excellent - both picture and sound. Unfortunately this DVD is the only GENUINE studio released DVD of any of Lanza's films available at the time I write this (26 June 2008). Apparantly the Great Caruso is being planned for a proper studio DVD release in the US some time soon but there are still no firm dates. BEWARE...all the other Lanza DVD's (of Caruso, Student Prince etc) which you see currently advertised on the internet, eBay etc are NOT official studio DVD ... Read More:

It tells the true story of a priest who started a home for boys in Omaha Nebraska. His simple faith, and belief that there is no such thing as a bad boy overcomes many obstacles.

Spencer Tracy plays Father Flanagan, and picked up an Oscar for his performance.
