This film follows the character of Mary Poppins the nanny who's practically perfect in every way. This timeless classic has magical and unforgettable songs for the whole family to enjoy. And this special 40th anniversary edition has some brilliant extras from a new short story with Julie Andrews, cut songs and a documentary of the making of the film.

Yes, there's slapstick, but it's the best - see the fight between museum guards and Chinese criminals, using stuffed animals as weapons, or the rematch pitting the Chinese against British nannies armed only with umbrellas and a determination not to take any more nonsense from you, young man! But a lot of the comedy comes from character and script, and perfect playing from all concerned. Ustinov, Hayes and Nimmo stand out, but Roy Kinnear and Geoffrey Pearson are in there somewhere, along with a long string of British character actors. The maid at Lord Castleberry's home has one brilliant wordless moment "Florence will look after you!" (Florence humphs silently). OK, so these days, we wouldn't have Europeans disguising themselves as Asiatics with blue ... Read More:

I first saw this innocent looking Disney film when I was about 14 and it absolutely TERRIFIED me and left me with nightmares for months. And I was no sheltered child... having seen many horror and other 18 certificate films way before I got to that age ...but none of them left a dent like this U certificate Disney film.
Then recently I bought the film for nostalgic purposes to see if it still had the same effect (I'm now in my late twenties) and though it doesn't now I can still see why it did. Basically the film is all about Irish folklore and one of the ideas was of a 'Howling Banshee' - a ghost that appeared and wailed whenever someone was about to die. But unlike most ghosts in horror films, this one was inescapable in that it didn't try ... Read More:

Peter Ustinov ad-libs his way through most of this film and Dean Jones does admirably as his straight man. Together they make a great double act that kept me laughing all the way through. Throw in a moustachioed villain with the wonderful name of Silky Seymour, some batty old ladies, a load of slapstick and a cheer-raising athletics contest and you have a great couple of hours of fun for adults and children alike. Highly recommended.

The plot of this movie is one that has been told time and time again, yet never seems to get old - an animal (in this case a dog) and a boy become friends. In this movie, however, it is told beautifully.
The basic story is:
The father has had to go away, leaving his wife and their two sons to take care of their farm (which they need, as the don't have any money, so they have to grow/rear their own food), which seems to be running well, when a stray dog befriends the younger boy. The older boy wants nothing to do with the dog, but when Old Yeller saves his brother's life, the older boy and Yeller become inseparable.
As the title of this review says, this movie is a real tear-jerker, because of it's tragic ending, which I ... Read More:

There is no doubt about it, back in "those days" entertainment was entertainment. The story is silly, and in many cases very predictable - however be that as it may. This movie is a Walt Disney delight. The cat is the show stealer and is responsible for many laughs. Of course that is what it is all about. A laugh a minute. The acting is good and reliable, no special effects stealing the show, and as the movie ends with the "badies" having been apprehended and the girl having got the guy, I felt entertained and relaxed. Thank you for a wonderful addition to my collection. A must if you just want to be entertained.

Hayley Mills is an appealing young heroine in search of her shipwrecked father but Maurice Chevalier, coming across more like a prospective dirty old man than a guardian, is a distinct embarrassment on the quest that sees them brave fire, flood, earthquake and unfriendly natives. Filming by numbers, this is surprisingly heavy-going.
A lavish but abortive attempt to recreate the success of Swiss Family Robinson and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and filmed when Walt himself still ruled the studio with an iron hand, a lot of money has obviously been spent on In Search of the Castaways - Paul Beeson's colour photography and Michael Stringer's art direction are very attractive - but little care. The script is disjointed ... Read More:
