Tom And Jerry - Classic Collection - Vol. 2

starring: Tex Avery, Joseph Barbera, Billy Bletcher, Daws Butler, Red Coffee
directed by: Tex Avery, Joseph Barbera, Michael Lah, William Hanna

Release Date May 03, 2004
I bought this DVD for the kids to watch in the car during a long drive on holiday in France. I notice that all the other reviews are concerned with the quality/editing/dubbing etc, however my review is aimed at parents who need to keep their kids entertained! My children are 7 and 5, and they laughed for three solid hours. I don't know about other parents, but I was dreading the long drive, however the drive was a pleasure with this DVD playing. It was an unbelievable hit with them and they just loved it. It made for a very harmonious drive through France as we couldn't help laughing at the kids laughing in the back. A brilliant DVD that has become our children's favourite DVD of all time.

Tom And Jerry - Classic Collection - Vol. 3

directed by: Tex Avery, Joseph Barbera, Michael Lah, William Hanna

Release Date June 28, 2004
For under a fiver (just!) I think this series of Tom and Jerry DVD's are excellent value. The DVD itself is double-sided, which helps to pack all those great cartoons in, and thankfully their are no adverts at the start; you can be playing in under 20 seconds from when you've put the disc in!

Unfortunately, as I've found with all the Tom and Jerry DVD's so far, is that they've suffered the finger-wagging of middle class citizens who feel the need to place the title of 'Politically Incorrect' or certain aspects of the cartoons. This has resulted in the Black Mama (maid) having her voice completely re-dubbed in many of the cartoons, replaced by a woman who speaks each word in the clearest, most perfect notion, to take away any idea ... Tom And Jerry - Classic Collection - Vol. 5

starring: Tex Avery, Joseph Barbera, Billy Bletcher, Daws Butler, Red Coffee
directed by: Tex Avery, Joseph Barbera, Michael Lah, William Hanna

The Tom & Jerry Classic Collection covers 159 of the 161 cartoons in chronological order, thus the first half of the DVD covers the remaining Hanna-Barbera era cartoons that weren't covered in Volumes 1-4.

The cartoon series was in decline by this point, and for whatever reasons, the CinemaScope cartoons were put into pan-and-scan meaning you sometimes miss a little of the action. However, this notwithstanding, many of the cartoons are good.

The second half features all of the cartoons from the Gene Deitch era, hence the sharp drop in quality. It didn't help that MGM gave the Czech team a very limited budget. In general these cartoons are creepy, unsettling, contain one-dimensional and evil characters, and laughs are ... Read More:

Tex Avery's Droopy: The Complete Theatrical Collection (REGION 1) (NTSC)

Release Date May 15, 2007
It's always been a surprise to me how little of Tex Avery's output was on DVD - and I had to go to French Amazon to get a 4 disc set....so since I have many of the cartoons on this set, why buy it? BECAUSE my friends this pair o' discs contains not only ALL the theatrically released Droopy cartoons (both the Avery and the last ones by Michael Lah) it contains them in their ORIGINAL forms. Too often these cartoons have been hacked or the soundtrack "blipped" ("Droopy's Good Deed" is a classic example) in order to accomodate the modern erroneous belief that cartoons are for children and that a cartoon made for adults in 1947 should adhere to the politically correct mores of sixty years later. There is a disclaimer that the cartoons reflect a time and place whose attitudes ... Read More:

Each Dawn I Die [1939] (REGION 1) (NTSC)

starring: James Cagney, George Raft, Mel Blanc, Arthur Q. Bryan, Jane Bryan
directed by: Bobby Connolly, Friz Freleng, Tex Avery, William Keighley

Release Date July 18, 2006
this film started quite promisingly, but then suddenly slowed down and then picked up. rather an uneven film but still has good scenes.
james cagney simply steals the film with another riveting performance but with a different style as well.this time, he isn't quite so keen to get involved in any shady dealings.(i would have thought he'd have enough on his mind with trying to prove his innocence)
there is certainly a gritty, uncompromising atmosphere, especially in the prison scenes; corrupt prison officials, mentally unbalanced convicts.who wants to do time?
teaming up cagney with george raft was a good move. they work well together. a shame raft didn't make it to the A list of stars; not the best actor i've seen, but good enough.
it's about ... Read More:

The filming of this movie may have been anything but smooth, and the plot not worthy of its two stars, but the overall impression one gets from watching this movie is one of joy and delight. Judy looks very good with a little extra weight: she looks healthy and happy. The colour is rich and warm. gene Kelly looks superb and dances brilliantly. Above all the film is joyful and melodic, right from the start. I especially love 'Happy harvest', which Judy sings on a tractor, Kelly's dance to 'Dig for your dinner' and 'Friendly star', which must be one of Judy's lovliest ballads. I am surprised no one gave this musical more stars - so here goes; a five star rating from me.
