Finally, a cd reissue of one of the best experimental releases from the 1980's. ''The Culling Is Coming'' was originally released in 1983 and was literally a record of 2 halves. One of the sides was a noisy, tape laden, ritual work out, whilst the other was constructed of calming gamelan-orientated pieces. For this reissue though, an extra 26 minute track has been addeed. From the same time period (October 1982), 'Move Back - Bite Harder' was recorded live in Belgium and is similar in tone to the experimental/tape piece from the original album - and just as good, in my opinion. One of the early well-known underground experimentals, who just in time skipped towards the hypnotizing rhythms of primitive music. Especially 'Kundalini' from the 'Seven Songs' record, already 20 and more years ago, is a tribute to primitivism in art and in real life.

Ofcourse 23 Skidoo started to make music which appealed to more listeners, even trying to seduce them with funkadelic hiphop in the mid 80's !! They just about succeeded before...they stopped alltogether !

I was SO happy to find out them making music in the new century, and even more happy to hear their funk based slap-beat as in the like of the best PIL years, accompanied by a more real rhythm-section. However, you have te get used to hear their big compromise ... Read More:

Three wonderful musicpieces, which you can't destroy by playing it even if you did that continuously for the rest of your life. This is one maxi-single you need to take with you, if you had the choice to take along one maxi-single before you're banned to for example St. Helena, to name an island. ;-)

23 Skidoo must be the best band around for me. I'm completely hooked. If you like this fantastic single aswell: get their 23 Skidoo selftitled album. Can't go wrong and I keep on buying it for dear friends of mine, who I really like...to enjoy the soundscapes of 23 Skidoo aswell ! And fold your hands and pray, that they make a new recording very, very soon.

Have you ever been walking along, when a street/office sound triggers a classic weird track in your head? I had "Mary's Operation" triggered, and, boy, this is a real weirdy! A woodwind and brass orchestrated effort, which conveys exactly the hollow futility of life 23 Skidoo wanted to put across, verging on the edge of whale song, but the exploration of the instruments is so penetrative, the lack of coherent structure becomes irrelevant to the cause. "Mary's Operation" just blows me away every time. But it wouldn't normally be so good, had its context not been so perfectly laid down by the preceding track "Vegas El Bandito", which is an upbeat twisted dance beat track, with montages of B-Movie Cowboy dialog sampled in. This album starts off in the style of 'Seven Songs', but it is not correct to judge this album by '....Songs' standard as that was a classic in its field.

More experimental if I can use that term, the main focus of this album is the group trying to create rhythms tracks centred around the Gamelan style of music from Indonesia. This involves steel drums and other percussion instruments. On the whole they do it very well and some songs are extremely funky to boot! But be warned this is not an album everyone is going to like, even everyone who likes industrial funk, you have to stick with it and give it a couple of re-listens to appreciate it fully. The band were doing their thing on this album and they have to be admired for that.

The Gospel Comes to New Guinea

This is the definitive meisterwerk from one of the 80s' lost musical gems. 23 Skidoo were vaguely affiliated with the industrial music scene, a space they shared with Cabaret Voltaire and Portion Control, among others. The techniques of the industrial crowd - Burroughs-esque tape cut ups and world music samples - are in evidence, but so are the basslines and beats that set the band apart. It's well known that the Chemical Brothers lifted the bass track from "Coup" for their own "Block Rockin' Beats", but the funk energy of the track was strong enough that it had made several appearances on bootleg mixes back in the day. This is a great selection of 23 Skidoo tracks - my advice is go the whole way and track down its companion releases, especially "Seven Songs", ... Read More:
