The Way the Wind Blows

Apparently being part of Beirut has had quite an influence on A Hawk and a Hacksaw. In third album "The Way the Wind Blows," this quirky Balkan-electro-psychfolk band gets even more into their sound... and by that, I mean less electro and psychfolk. Not typical Elephant 6 fare, but good.

It opens with "In the River," a swooning ballad crammed with accordion and horns... which changes tempo into an entirely different kind of song. It's followed by the title track, a bittersweet fiddle tune that wanders through the slow accordion tune. It sounds like a gypsy fiddler who got left behind, and is lamenting about it via music.

They continue that sound through the next song, only to burst into a raucous little dance number ... Read More:

Jeremy Barnes definitely deserves an honor seat in the world of indie quirk-rock, as evidenced by the self-titled debut of his one-man superband Hawk and a Hacksaw. In this album, Barnes wrestles a bunch of instruments into making playful, wildly creative music, full of cartoonish whimsy.

Barnes usually starts off with a rooster crowing, followed by an offbeat piano melody that builds up slowly, getting more and more complicated before the drums kick in. And then those rattling noises. The first song "Maremaillette" ends up being swamped by a bright array of instruments, until the piano is only a part of the background.

Its hard to explain and even harder to understand how much I struggled with A Hawk and A Hacksaw, I tried so hard to fall in love with them & The Way The Wind Blows album, the one that so many people raved about, the one that was included in so many end of year polls, and rather highly too, yet it never really struck the chord, just like Beirut whatever everyone else was seeing was passing me by, I was probably staring right at it but couldn't see for looking. So its comes as quite a surprise that the follow up that has scarcely been mentioned, I've yet to see any hype on the forums from the very same people that championed The Way The Wind Blows, has had such an instant appeal to me.
