This compilation album needs little introduction as it has sold a zillion copies or something ;), and there is a reason for that. Nobody, not even The Beatles have created a finer collection of pop songs. Pop is often sneered at by some hoity toity music lovers, but there is no need. A finely crafted 3 minute pop tune can be just as meaningful and exquisite as any other piece of music. The tunes Bjorn & Benny created will live on forever, and the girls singing stays in your mind so very easily.
For me this is not their ultimate collection, as I liked more of the bitter-sweet songs they did like Eagle and The Day Before You Came. But that's a personal preference. This compilation contains all the biggest hits, including some ... Read More:

...and just in time for Christmas!
Difficult to see who this set is really aimed at. On the one hand, the casual listener is already well served by the numerous ABBA compilations currently on the market (there are or have been more ABBA Best Ofs than there have genuine ABBA studio albums); on the other, the serious fan will be disappointed by the lack of genuine rare material (no foreign language hits and, more importantly, no unreleased stuff from the vaults).
So, peerless though some of the music is, I can rate this latest repackaging no higher than three stars :-(
Release Date June 24, 2002

There are too many filler tracks on this album to make it a worthwhile purchase. Perversely, it's one of those tracks - Eagle - that means this collection gets two stars instead of just the one. Stick to "Gold", it's the one with all the cheesey disco on and is all you need.
Release Date March 17, 2008
For all its world-conquering success, ABBA Gold didn't really "rehabilitate" ABBA. The casual track sequencing and the choice of only the biggest hits means that a lot of good stuff was missed. The kitsch that dogged the early part of ABBA's career seems to be reinforced.
With The Definitive Collection, however, you get (a) all of the tracks that appear on Gold, (b) plus the additional gems that couldn't be included on Gold, and (c) very elegant packaging.
Another great plus with this set is that the tracks are sequenced chronologically. This makes it easier to see how the group progressed from their somewhat "innocent" early days to their remarkably affecting early 80s output. The big hits are well known and have been discussed ad infinitum. ... Read More:

Abba's final studio album tends to divide opinion, but for me it was a fine way for them to finish thier active recording career together.
'One Of Us' was Abba's last major international hit and is probably the best known track here. The follow up song in the UK was 'Head Over Heels' which shocked everyone by peaking outside the UK top 20.
Was it all over for Abba?. Well, in terms of major hit singles it certainly was (in the US 'When All Is Said And Done' flopped also), but this album gave us a few treats and an indication of where Benny and Bjorns musical interests were going (ie musical theatre).
The title track is a mighty song that I always thought could have been a massive hit in it's own right. 'Soldiers' is a lovely Agnetha song, and 'I Let The Music ... Read More:

Abba in the groove - same formula, similar songs but everything still sounds as fresh as ever and the hits and memorable songs keep rolling off the production line without anything sounding hackneyed.
Yes it's all as fresh as ever and choc full of outstanding songs like "Super Trouper" with the immortal lines "I was sad and tired of everything, when I called you last night from Glasgow" and the brilliant break-up song "The Winner Takes it All." Elsewhere "Our Last Summer" and "Happy New Year" are evidence of spot on songwriting.
There is an inherent sadness about this album with strong lyrics a million miles away from those of five years previous. Abba had come of age. This is grown up pop/rock for middle aged angst ridden people. This album is full of ... Read More:

Arrival is in many people's opinion Abba's finest moment. Certainly an album containing 'Knowing Me-Knowing You', 'Money Money Money' and 'Dancing Queen' has to be a contender for Abba's greatest album.
Apart from these classic three singles, there are several other noteworthy tracks on this classic album. Had this album been released in the 80s there would have probably been even more classic hits lifted from this collection. A strong contender for fourth single would have been 'My Love My Life' beautifully sung by Agnetha. This album also contains one of Agnetha's favourite tracks 'That's Me'. Closing the album is the title track 'Arrival' which was later covered by Mike Oldfield and became a hit for him.
An album truly deserving of the title 'Classic'.

This was the first album I ever bought and thirty years later I still think it is excelent. It includes two classic Abba number one singles (Take a Chance On Me and Name of The Game), but apart from those every track is pure Abba gold. 'Eagle' sees Abba in full grown up mood and the instrumentation is just fabulous. 'One Man One Woman' gives Frida a chance to shine in full heartbreak mode. 'Move On' was always one of my favourites and has a fabulous melody, if you can ignore the slightly cheesy spoken intro by Bjorn. 'Hole In Your Sole' has tremendous energy and was performed live by Abba in 1977 as part of 'The Girl With Golden Hair' mini musical. 'Thank You For The Music' is perhaps the best known Abba song never to be a major hit. In fact, it wasn't even released as a single in the UK until 1983 ... Read More:

There is much more of a disco feel about Voulez Vous but that doesn't detract from an album where at last there is no filler material. Marriage break-ups and relationship problems seem to have worked in the group's favour as the songs become more biting and meaningful. Just listen to "Angel Eyes" and "If It Wasn't For the Nights" to see what I mean.
It's almost as if the quartet are using confessional material to expound their thoughts and sorrows in a strangely therapeutic style reminiscent of some of Fleetwood Mac's material. It gives the album an almost sad quality. There is some top class pop material here such as "As Good As New," "Chiquitita" and "I Have A Dream." Voulez Vous proved that Abba were by now a class act.
