At first play I skipped through the album..enjoyed Chasing Pavements, tolerated Heartbreaker, looked forward to the ending of the last track.

Put this back on today and was captivated..completely. Even after the seventh playthrough...why..I don't know..maybe a reassessment of expectations..whatever..this is Outstanding - just listen to the tunes and forget the hype.

Glass: Violin Concerto

Glass's violin concerto is pleasant and immediately accessible. But, Glass's music is all very similar; its as if there is a number of ideas which get continously re-cycled. To my mind, Adams' concerto is stronger

Chasing Pavements

It's a ballad but because its coupled with Adele's gorgeous voice it's deep, mellowing and smooth all at the same time. Nevertheless, it's not for easy listening and has a message most people can relate to that's why I've given it 4 stars. I just wish I could listen to it all the time without getting surly and brooding!

Hometown Glory

It's a ballad but because its coupled with Adele's gorgeous voice it's deep, mellowing and smooth all at the same time. Nevertheless, it's not for easy listening and has a message most people can relate to that's why I've given it 4 stars. I just wish I could listen to it all the time without getting surly and brooding!

This series, produced by EMI in the days of LPs, is one of the great achievements of the gramophone - they rightfully belong up there with the Decca Ring, the EMI Callas series, and any other candidates you care to name. Together they provide a truly comprehensive survey of singing right through the age of recording up to the early days of the LP. Sadly, to the best of my knowledge, only Volumes 3 & 4 have appeared on CD - the very earliest era of recording and the period up to the introduction of electrical recording methods that were originally on Volumes 1 and 2 really deserve to be heard again.

I'm making a real confession here - until we purchased this on Saturday September 8 2001 I had barely registered in my consciousness the name of Arvo Part, let alone these works.

I'm converted.

Wandering in a record store in Nottingham my partner picked this CD up and I asked him what it was. "I've not heard any of his stuff but...". I looked at the cover - it struck me as intriguing. I read some of the notes inside. Some mutterings about driving through the American mid-west and hearing "Tabula Rasa" on the radio.

"Lets go into the listening room..." I suggested.

For those that are looking for Duffy, go find her and stop hating on this lovely 20 year old woman! She's got the kind of voice that will take over when Alison Moyet decides to chuck it in - which I hope is never!

Adele sings from the heart with soul, pure soul, the kind of old soul in a fresh body that comes along once in a lifetime - she has a long road to go to be the next Moyet...but she's on the right track with her album and the singles...and the cover song on this single - purely fantastic...

I can't hate on Duffy...but she does sound like old 1960's Dusty Springfield, which isn't a bad thing...but it sounds like that's all she's got...enjoy Adele for Adele...and the Whiskey voice is a refreshing today as Karen Carpenter was ... Read More:
