The Midsummer Marriage is redolent of Michael Tippett at his most enticingly lyrical and invitingly opaque. That said, if you are looking to explore the riches or eccentricities of his marvellous first opera in detail, I wouldn't start here. The sound quality requires some aural excavation. But once you have absorbed Colin Davis's definitive Royal Opera House account (Lyrita SRCD2217, 1995), this radio broadcast of the first performance at Covent Garden - conducted by John Pritchard and produced by Christopher West on 27 January 1955 - is well worth the investment. And for fully-fledged Tippett aficionados, it's obviously essential.
There's vigour, feeling and commitment in Pritchard's pioneering rendition. What it occasionally lacks ... Read More:

Louis Kaufman was a pioneer of new music and the selections included on this CD exemplify this.
All these works were by very close friends. I say that because Dr Annette Kaufmann, the pianist featured in 'Ennanga' is a great friend of mine....so is Judith Anne Still, the daughter of the composer of that work (another close friend)so I may be biased. 'Ennanga' (meaning African Harp) was written by William Grant Still and dedicated to Lois Adel Craft, the brilliant harpist featured on the recording. The version here is the premiere recording for harp, piano and string quartet. In reality, this is a brilliant 'undiscovered' harp 'concerto' in three movements and it certainly rivals the concerto's of Rodrigo and Ginestera.

This truly legendary, top-notch remastered double CD is a stunning recording of the 2nd symphony from 1963. It succeeds to supply and enhance a very analogue feeling and is one of the most gripping and intense Mahler's 2nd I have experienced. Some listeners might consider the Andante, the only drawback, which is on the slower side of "slow". Still, more than anything, this recording presents the heart of Mahler (or if you will, Bernstein?) to the listener. Get this record, put on your headphones - this is a must-have for any symphonic lover.
