Undoubtedly one of Traditional Country music's finest artists - perhaps only second to the great George Strait - Alan Jackson continues his illustrious, almost two-decade long career with this, his first ever full-album of self-penned songs. Although clocking in at over 70 minutes, it's still a bountiful listening experience, in turns reflective ("I Wish I Could Back Up", "Listen to Your Senses", "1976", "Right Where I Want You", the number 1 "Small Town Southern Man" and "Sissy's Song", an ode to a recently deceased family friend) and humourous ("I Still Like Bologne", "Laid Back and Low Key", the chart-topping "Good Time" and my personal favourite, "Country Boy").

Wow. what a hit, as a previous reviewer said this is ok if you are trying him for the first time. This guy has that smooth old style country voice with just enough of a new edge to make him contemperary and sexy!!!!
If you have never heard of him or not to sure think of a cross between Tim McGraw and Garth Brooks. This album has a great mix of smooch alongs, soulful, thoughprovoking and just foot tapping greatness.

Greatest Hits Vol.2

A terrific follow-up to "Greatest Hits Vol. I", this collection is a must for Jackson fans; it of course has his mega-hit with Jimmy Buffett, "It's Five O'Clock Somewhere", and there's a good balance between the up-tempo songs and the ballads. The musicianship is outstanding, including the masterful mandolin and fiddle work by Stuart Duncan, and piano by Hargus "Pig" Robbins.

The songs:
"I'll Go On Loving You" is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. Written by Kieran Kane (once of the short-lived but brilliant duo The O'Kanes in the late '80s), the words and melody are superb, and Alan sings it with the tender soul of a poet.

Live at Texas Stadium

I'm English but I was actually at this concert in the Dallas Cowboys Stadium along with 80,000 fans sweltering in temperatures of 90 degrees plus. This truly is the stuff of legends.

The show, whch lasted all afternoon and evening was brilliant and this CD captures the spirit of the work of 3 legends of country music. If you don't know anything about country music then this is a good taster for this genre of songwriting and how country fans look to always have a good time. Check out Five O'Clock Somewhere or Margaritaville if you have the time. It ain't big, it ain't clever, it ain't real smart but it is good fun

Like Red On A Rose

Most Alan Jackson albums could be categorised as Friday afternoon beer offerings. They don't tend to be particularly subtle (though that is often quite a refreshing thing) and they're best consumed with a side order of fries. What's different here is that what is on offer is much more of a late night red wine smooth affair. Put it on before bedtime and it may soothe you but it's a lot less hick than Jackson's usual fare.

'Like Red on a Rose' requires a different listening mood to other Jackson albums and it is a welcome temporary change of direction. That said I'll be as happy as anyone else to listen to another album of songs about broken trucks, Friday afternoon beer or biscuits and gravy. Honest.

What I Do

In his younger days, Alan included plenty of rocking up-tempo songs on his albums. These days, the up-tempo songs are fewer but Alan still delivers country music of the highest quality while remaining true to his country roots.

So the ballads and mid-tempo songs dominate here, whether upbeat (Too much of a good thing, There ya go), sad (Rainy day in June, USA today, You don't have to paint me a picture, Strong enough, Monday morning church) or reflective (If love was a river, If French fries were fat free).

Alan shows a comedic touch in The taking song repair blues, in which he gets even (in a nice way) with a car mechanic who over-charges for his services - you are likely to enjoy this if you also enjoyed One piece at a time (the Johnny Cash classic). ... Read More:

As if contemporary country music needed any reminding of Alan Jackson's place in the highest echelon of the art, 'Drive' serves that purpose masterfully. A mix of original and cover songs, Jackson is on top form in this album. The success of the title track was deserved and it leads the way into a very neatly connected series of classic Jackson material. Songs about love, songs about cars, (songs about the love of cars!). His live CMA version of 'Where were you when the world stopped turning', is a poigniant reminder of the need to look at what is important in our lives in the post 9/11 era. Perhaps including the studio version of the same song allows it to dominate the album a little too much, but it is a small price to pay when listening to Jackson's take on contemporary country. ...
