Misa Criolla

This recording was made in a small village church in Spain, well known for its wonderful accoustics.

If any classical music lover can fail to enjoy this, it's beyond my understanding. Does the fact that José Carreras is a world famous opera star give everything he sings a touch of glamour which lessens the originality of, as in this case, the Argentinian and Hispano-American regional rythms? Actually both Argentina, Bolivia and Peru are referred to in the introduction inside the CD cover.

In my opinion it's the simple songs - I have heard him in relatively unknown Spanish and German very soft and peaceful songs - which show Carreras at his best.

King's Singers Christmas

Having been a King's Singers fan for decades I was happy, but still kind of disappointed, to welcome another Christmas album from the group; this is their third such issue on CD format. Happily, the repertoire does include "novelties" (if this a suitable word for old music) and the songs are well organised. Moreover, the performances are the best so far - the recording line-up (there have been a change since :-() is, in my opinion, the best one for Early music.

Misas Criolla, Luba & Flamenca

Having been a King's Singers fan for decades I was happy, but still kind of disappointed, to welcome another Christmas album from the group; this is their third such issue on CD format. Happily, the repertoire does include "novelties" (if this a suitable word for old music) and the songs are well organised. Moreover, the performances are the best so far - the recording line-up (there have been a change since :-() is, in my opinion, the best one for Early music.

Ramirez - Misa Criolla; Navidad nuestra

This is an awful version of Missa Criolla and Navidad Nuestra. It sounds like someone decided they wanted to do a Barry Manilow version. To see what it should be like look for "Misa Criolla - Misa Flamenca". Unfortunately, that version only has the original Missa Criolla and not the Navidad Nuestra but it's a million times better than this slush. Alternatively, there's a Jose Carreras version which is a reasonable attempt. But not this. It's a total travesty of beautiful music.

This is an amazing album.. starting with the wonderful Russell Watson - it just gets better and better.. I cant stop listening to it.. fresh, exciting mix of old and new.. a must for an music collection

Kiri sings Karl

The first time I listened to it I could not even listen to the end of the CD. I thought if I listened agian it might be better but it was not.The renditions all lack passion. Kiri wables away the same in almost every track.It certainly was not up to Karl,s usuall standard. It is had to express how disapointed I am.

José Carreras - The Golden Years

Since I first heard him in 1986, José Carreras has been my favourite tenor. His lyrical voice has captured my heart completely. No other voice moves me as Carreras' does. He moves me to tears, to laughter, to love, to beauty - to remembrance, to peace - and to HOPE!

As for this recording, my favourites are "Una furtiva lagrima" (Donizetti), "Dein ist mein ganzes Herz" (Das Land des Lächelns), "Che gelida manina" (La Bohème) and yes, "Nessun Dorma" (Turandot) - and no, it's not always about the strongest voice.

I have lots of other recordings with Carreras. Spanish songs, German songs, love songs, mixture of opera arias and popular songs and of course, opera. I have reviewed "Carmen" conducted by von Karajan in Berlin ... Read More:

the albonini track is not the same as the classic fm tv video,the record
lacks the spanish, rythm of the video which was disapointing,,,
the cd nevertheless is a good listen,

José Cura - Anhelo

I first heard Jose Cura when this CD was reviewed in Gramophone and the last track was included on the magazines free CD. I was entranced and bought this CD based on this one track and I was hooked! The songs are sung from the heart and there isn't one track that disappoints. Don't buy this CD if you want powerful tenor singing. Do buy it if you like music that touches your heart - you won't be disappointed
