In the UK only Stage Fright was a chart album and it was not much more in the States with Rock of Ages added later.Hit singles were only minor in comparison to say Bob Dylan's.
As I'm not much of a rock fan-if that's supposed to mean heavy metal or hard rock-I see the Band as closer to country music and certainly to Americana which is just an extension to Roots music.
I don't pretend to understand rock critic language-which basically praises the first Band albums then claims to be disappointed with what followed when its really all the same thing-staying in the same turf.

Bubblegum

If you want grunge go elsewhere, this is all about pure songmanship with minimal background noise to take your attention away from the vocals. Lanegan's voice has developed beyond his Screaming Trees days and is more nicotine and bourbon soaked than ever here. There is a wide variety of styles here from folksy ballards to almost industrial rock with what sounds like an anvil instead of a drumkit (metamphetamine blues.) It's none the worse for it; something for all moods. Chris Goss (Masters of Reality & occasional Queens of the Stone Age contributor) sings backing vocals on 100 days - just a wonderful atmospheric track. Money Don't Matter

I had the pleasure of seeing the Martin Harley Band when they came to our Student Union in Exmouth last year. There was only about 40 people who went to see them but they were awesome! They had everyone in the place dancing and the music was brilliant! All the songs on this album are brilliant and even better live! We partied with them afterwards in one of the halls of residence and they were really nice guys too!

Stage Fright: Remastered

I know that the overwhelming consensus of opinion says 'Big Pink' and 'The Band' are The Band's best two studio albums, but 'Stage Fright' is my favourite. For me, it's a warmer album with a greater r&b element and the players sound as if they're enjoying what they're doing. I am not bowled over by 'Big Pink', an arid, lumbering album that owes much of its reputation to the Dylan connection (Basement Tapes is a great album though). 'The Band' is a classic and features some stand-out songs, whereas 'Stage Fright' is all of one quality, but it isn't as carefree. 'Time To Kill' and 'The Shape I'm In' float in a way nothing on those earlier albums does. 'Just Another Whistle Stop', the title track and 'The Rumor' all have arresting, dramatic qualities. East Meets East

Although not having any classical music training, nor the ability to write a critical analysis, all I can say is that from the opening notes to the closing chord I was absolutely captivated.
It's a hypnotic collection of pieces which simply draw you into following their every turn, step, phrase and passage. The melodies are haunting and indeed sinuous, sensual, emotive...you really can't avoid flowing with them.
The technical aspects mean nothing to me other than I have a deep appreciation for the work and energy of Kennedy as well his phenomenal ability to make me want hear again and again whatever he does - be it jazz, Hendrix and now this.
I agree with the others - it's a must have, but not a shelf filler. This shows up in my top 3 on my MP3 player time after time...or maybe ... Read More:

CDs beat vinyl anyday.How else would you get the extra tracks-the unissued stuff?
As for The Band doing covers-why not? Everybody should do covers and many Band songs have been covered by others.
The set kicks off with what sounds as if its going to be Frankie Ford's Roberta-which turns out to be the famous Frogman song of the 50s.
Nice touch with the Harry Like Theme-you can see how this led to the melody of The Last Waltz.
Read the booklet's essay on The Band and you learn that Robbie Robertson was into the Polish composer Kzrkrystof Penderecki-the others passed on that though!
