Barry White didn't mean a great deal to me until I worked night shift in a local factory, when he was played quite a lot as the local station's 'sexy, night-time music.' Well, it may have been those things and more if you were at home on the sofa or in bed, but on night shift? But having your sleeping habits turned topsey-turvey certainly gave his music a more receptive edge and the emotions became much sharper, and the 'You See The Trouble With Me' track, which has a quirky and unusual kind of guitar backing really started to appeal.
Then I heard track 5, the ultra-famous 'Just The Way You Are' and being there quietly working and listening with my colleagues, the words and lyrics to this fabulous song made me realise that whatever you ... Read More:

Unlike the other reviewers I AM old enough to remember Barry White the first time around though I too enjoyed Ally McBeal.
BW first got into music as a musician & later as a talent spotter for record companies & then moving into the production side.
His first big hit was Love Unlimited's "Walking In The Rain" which featured BW speaking on the telephone to his girl friend.
Right from this early track (which charted in both the UK & the USA in the early 70s) the BW 'sound' could be heard: romantic strings, slushy vocals over a strong rhythm.
This album doesn't stray from the sound at all, all the tracks feature the same kind of voice (bar the 2 instrumentals), similar sounding songs ... Read More:

This good value compilation provides several classic tracks from Big Barry which do not appear on The Collection of his biggest hits. True, there is also a bit of forgettable filler from the late 1970s, but the selections from his early 70s albums show him on top form, and were on his first Greatest Hits LP back in 1975. Particularly notable are Honey please, I've got so much to give, and the impassioned Standing in the shadows of love - which puts the Four Tops version in the shade (if you'll forgive the pun). The original single mix of Never never gonna give you up is included, and interestingly It's only love is the number later covered by Simply Red.

Barry White’s brand of sensual orchestral seventies soul is sorely missed. We can do with a bit of old-fashioned sensuality on radio these days. This love song collection includes all his work (Did he do anything but love songs?) His greatest hits from that melody-friendly decade are all here: Can’t Get Enough Of Your Love, I’m Gonna Love You Just A Little Bit More and the sublime You’re The First, The Last, My Everything. I always liked his understated version of Just The Way You Are much more than Billy Joel’s overwrought emoting on the original, and Never Never Gonna Give You Up is still as delicious now as it was back then. There’s not a bad track on Love Songs and many classics, like It May Be Winter Outside ... Read More:

A great price for a wide selection of British Classics. The pieces are performed and recorded well and make an enjoyable alternative to the more serious classical music that is normally on offer. However if you are looking for full emotional depth in your music then these pieces will seem a bit too light for you.
