A fairly preposterous proposition at the best of times, Bauhaus occasionally came up with a killer art-rock tune - but boy did you have to sit through some pretentious guff to get to it.
Their most famous song remains 'Bela Lugosi's Dead.' Extraordinarily long for a single released in 1979, it still exudes a clammy dread. Pete Murphy's ghoulish, disembodied voice is perfectly suited to the hammy tale of bats and belltowers, vampires and virgins.
'She's In Parties' is a fine single, for once the strangulated guitar enhancing the song not detracting from it. 'Kick In The Eye' is loose, funky, danceable. The urgent, dramatic 'The Passion Of Lovers' is another top track, as is the excellently titled 'Terror Couple Kill ... Read More:

I suppose everybody has a band that they consider to be "theirs" and Bauhaus were most definitely "mine"! After seeing Bauhaus on Top of the Pops performing She's In Parties I bought the cassette of Burning From the Inside and everything changed for me and my taste in music. Sod's Law, the band split up a couple of months after I got what was then their last studio album. After bumping in to a seasoned Bauhaus gig veteran on holiday at this time I soon realised my knowledge was woefully limited to the one album and decided to try out their back catalogue. There isn't a single poor Bauhaus album and each one sounds different from the ones before. If Go Away White is your only experience of what Bauhaus are capable of I would recommend dipping in ... Having just bought the CD some 24 years after originally buying the album... I am shocked at how good it still sounds. They were my favourite band of the time and Pete was a great showman. The atmosphere they whipped up was always dark and sensual unlike the bleak, hopeless but brilliant Joy Division which were also the talk of the students union bar. Fantastic; buy it, buy it all.... as for Goths, dont think the word really existed at that time so stop making comparisons.

Before the Goth scene had a name to call itself, there was Bauhaus,a post-punk band led by the enigmatic Peter Murphy, himself a cross between a dark version of Bowie`s Ziggy and something that you sense is lurking malevolently in the deep shadows of your basement, but are too afraid to look.`The Sky`s Gone Out` saw the band reach the pinnacle of their creativity,an album that defined everything that was so vital and intelligent about its members collective talents. From the no-let-up rollarcoaster ride that is Eno`s `Third Uncle`,to the brilliant crypt crawler that is `Swing The Heartache`,this portrays a band firmly in their niche and working it with a sly grin and menacing swagger. This is a band in its prime.Compared to previous albums `The Skies Gone Out` provides ... The final studio album by Bauhaus is a rather fractured piece with lead singer, Peter Murphy, laid low with viral pneumonia for most of its recording. The band played on and recorded a number of songs without him, some of which rate among the finest Bauhaus have ever produced. The best of these is "Slice of Life" written and sung by guitarist Daniel Ash. After a promising start the album flops towards the end. Opening with the magnificent single "She's in Parties" the band take us through a range of styles, from the haunting acoustic mantra of "King Volcano" to David Jay's "Who Killed Mr. Moonlight?" a slow piano piece. My personal favourite is "Honeymoon Croon" a reworking of a song Bauhaus first in wrote 1979. Derided ... Read More:

This second album by Bauhaus continued the band' exploration of the gothic sensibility that they had so brilliantly pioneered on their debut. There is a definite effort to broaden their musical style with more explicit keyboard and synth experimentation. Amongst the best songs are the tracks Of Lilies And Remains, a type of spoken poem with nightmarish images over squeaking guitar, nervous drumming and spacious, evocative synths, and Kick In The Eye, a gripping ballad with hypnotically repetitive phrases over an atmospheric rock backing. The up-tempo track In Fear Of Fear has particularly impressive keyboard textures, whilst Hair Of The Dog is a great track with rousing vocals and Muscle In Plastic is a dissonant excursion with an almost funky undertone. Bauhaus is an acquired ... Read More:

Great performances. The sound quality on some of the tracks is not perfect but that doesn't effect my listening pleasure. My favorite is the 'The spy in the cab' - 'Automated Autonomy' spot on.
Release Date February 01, 1988
Being an acquired taste, Bauhaus is best introduced to the newcomer through a Best Of collection. And this is the superior compilation by far from this pioneering goth band as it contains all of their early classics, including rare singles and a great choice of tracks from the first two albums In The Flat Field and Mask.
My personal favorites are the deranged Stigmata Martyr with its scary Latin recitation, St. Vitus Danse, A God In An Alcove and The Passion Of Lovers plus the early singles Telegram Sam, (their tribute to Marc Bolan of T. Rex) and this live version of the legendary Bela Lugosi’s Dead. Other great moments are Spy In The Cab, Terror Couple Kill Colonel and Hair Of The Dog.
Inspired by The Cure and The Banshees, Bauhaus were brave pioneers who ... Read More:
