Yes, when I hear Webster blow his horn I'm smitten by the sheer beauty of his sound; the way he carresses his mouthpeace and blows his horn somehow produces warm and complex tone, capable of extremely wide range of emotion, impressive in all registers, but always beautiful (without even a hint of schmaltz or kitsch...).
In upper register he sometimes sounds sensitive like a violin, without pathetic quality (jazz) violinists can have in their upper register playing, in lower register my whole body reverberates with Ben's power. This is an essential record to any jazz collection. The pairing of Ben Webster and Art Tatum may have appeared questionable yet it works perfectly. If you like the participants and have not heard these timeless performances, you are in for a treat. Desert Island material.

Whilst I knew of Ben Webster, he had never really impinged on my conscousness until I heard this CD and now I'm a fan. Here he is playing with two groups one the ubiquitous Oscar Peterson Trio (in the days of Barney Kessel) and the other with Harry Edison, Benny Carter and the Oscar Peterson Trio (in the days of Herb Ellis) under the guidance of Morman Granz. I now realise that there is little else one could ask for to show case this exceptional tenor saxophonist. If you have got it you know what I'm talking about, if not get it.
