Great to realise how many hits and brill tunes Billy Ocean released. As he is soon to tour again, I fully expect this CD to be re-released at a more expensive price, so get in there soon!

Born in Trinidad as Leslie Charles, he was raised in Britain from an early age, eventually coming to public attention as Billy Ocean via two UK number two hits and two other UK top twenty hits in the seventies.

Billy's first UK hit, Love really hurts without you, was a catchy, up-tempo soul song that made number two in the UK. The follow-up, LOD Love on delivery, just made the top twenty. Next came Stop me if you've heard it all before, which just missed the top ten. After that came his second number two hit, Red light spells danger.

Greatest Hits

From the middle 1970s through the next decade, Billy Ocean was a regular vistor to the charts on both sides of the Atlantic with his special brand of soulful pop. The melodic appeal of songs like Get Outta My Dreams, Caribbean Queen and Loverboy is still there and tracks like When The Going Gets Tough, Colour Of Love and There'll Be Sad Songs sound even better these days when the charts are filled with bland pop and boring rap. There's just one unforgivable omission here, the great song Red Light Spells Danger that was a huge hit for Ocean in the mid seventies. No collection could be considered complete without that masterpiece.

Let's Get Back Together - The Love Songs of Billy Ocean

Let's Get Back Together is a pleasant collection of Billy's ballads from the 80's (plus a few from the 90's and beyond). The big hits are here, and there's a really cool bonus in the previously unreleased "Our Love Will Survive" (which really should have been released back in '88!). I'm not as crazy about the two new tunes: the production is very thin and impersonal, and Billy doesn't do a whole lot vocally on them. I hope that he'll have more involvement in writing and production again if he does end up recording further - his involvement in the construction of these new songs (both remakes) is missed!

Jive was wise to include "Promise Me," a very underrated tune from the Love Zone album. But upon listening to more mediocre tunes here like "Because ... Read More:

Collections

The Trinidadian Billy Ocean's accessible blend of soul and pop gave him plenty of top ten hits. My favourites here include Love Really Hurts Without You and the unforgetable Red Light Spells Danger, a huge hit in about 1977. He had the perfect pop sensibility, underpinned by soulful vocals and helped by superb production. His 1980s hits like (When The Going Gets Tough) The Tough Get Going and Get Outa My Dreams, Get Into My Car are slick and smooth, typical of the dance music of the 1980s but with added soul that have made them stand the test of time very well. This album is not comprehensive - the major omission being Caribbean Queen, but still a good collection of melodic songs from the 1970s and 80s and worth it just for Red Light alone.
